Cutting it in half can be tricky. Next time, let a butter knife sit in very warm water till warm, then use it to go around the outer edge of wax. (2 knives work better, one can be warming while the other is being used.) Do this until you're into the jam/preserves, then simply tilt it up on side, and lift out.
Don't throw it away, though. It should be rinsed free of any jam, and then can be remelted for a potpourri tart, used to wax drawer runners, so they won't stick, or wax thread for sewing on buttons. (Draw the thread over the edge of the wax.)
