wax on jam???
i did some work for this lovely old lady Armenian i think ,any way she was really happy with the job and gave me a few jars of damsom jam ,it is the best jam i've tasted since my gran used to make it all those years ago , the only thing is ,she has used this wax as a seal on it ,has any one ever heard of using it before ?? and more to the point how do i get the stuff off without breaking the jar or putting wax in the lovely jam

Yes, quite normal to seal jam with wax. How thick is the wax? Have you tried popping it in the fridge, let the wax get nice and cold, then pierce the top with a fork and hopefully, with a litle gentle encouragment, the wax seal should lift away in one piece. That was the way I used to get the wax seal off of the jar of stilton cheese I got from my son at christmas

wax on jam???
*sometimes* if you stick a butter knife in the wax and twist it a bit it breaks the seal.

My grandmother used to wax to seal her jelly and jams. We broke the wax by using a knife to cut the wax in half, then used a fork to fish the pieces out.

wax on jam???
Here, we use Gulf Wax.

Cutting it in half can be tricky. Next time, let a butter knife sit in very warm water till warm, then use it to go around the outer edge of wax. (2 knives work better, one can be warming while the other is being used.) Do this until you're into the jam/preserves, then simply tilt it up on side, and lift out.

Don't throw it away, though. It should be rinsed free of any jam, and then can be remelted for a potpourri tart, used to wax drawer runners, so they won't stick, or wax thread for sewing on buttons. (Draw the thread over the edge of the wax.)
