OMG I was saying just the same thing in another forum!

Yes I wish I was bought up back then. England was a much better place IMO.

I am fed up with being told we can not do and say certain things.

Like hang up our England flag for example.

And where do our taxes go??

Ok *shuts up*

Hmm good idea. I have them coming over and some point tomorrow about the stolen bikes.

Apparently a pregnant woman can also ask someone for a pint of milk and they have to give it to them, how stupid is that if it's true!

the pregnant woman asking for milk was obviously in harder times, loads of these wacky laws still exist the only reason they are not revoked is for tying up valuable time debating it.did you know as an englishman ime supposed to by law practice the longbow for 1 hour each day?...i love it lets leavre these laws alone, bye the way police officers refer to their "bowl"type helmets as,,,,"tits"!

Things WORLDWIDE were different in the 1950s. Some was good and some was bad....the same as ANY era.

Of course we remember it as a 'fun time' ....we were kids back then.

BUT .....Not many people owned their own homes, very few women went to work, no washing machines unless you were rich, no central heating. Corporal punishment ! There were still rival gangs - even in the boring old South.

Those who did have mortgages would have been paying well over 11% interest rate, the rest might have lived in poor housing owned by unscrupulous landlords or the local council.

As for foreigners....the UK has always been a country (or group of) that has welcomed people from foreign countries....ever since adventurous people found the need to travel. One group or another has always been out of favour.....no change here except most wanted to live in peaceful co-existence not 'rule' the land.

Taxes.....well I must admit that I am sometimes baffled about where the money goes particularly since I am semi-retired and find my pension, savings and meagre wage all taxed.....however these are some of the areas I DO know about. NHS (free healthcare), Schools (free education), Forces (for the countries security), Policeforce....need to check on other things.

I have never had a problem putting up my St Georges flag or my Union Jack. After 9/11 I flew the American flag for a month.

I have never had a problem with the 'law of the land' and have been fined twice for speeding ~ 'twas a fair cop.

I DO have a problem with corruption within democratically elected goverment and with the obvious lies of some politicians....I've never heard ONE of them answer a straight question with a straight answer.....mind you I haven't got much faith in estate agents, solicitors etc at the moment.....over paid and under performing ...sorry to rant about this.

All in all, if you look round the world you can see countries far worse off IMO...I love my country....'warts and all'

I wonder why. The standard variable rate in the 1950s averaged 4.99%. There

were only 6 rate changes in those 10 years.

Humph. While this has been true, in the main, during 2005 over 750,000 migrants came to Britain (source: Capital Economics). Net migration has been estimated as

400,000 (same source).

Me too Abbey.....I get a little tired of people being so critical without putting forward their ideas to improve things.

We would all be in a sorry state if we still lived as we did in the '50s.

We probably wouldn't have a car to worry about parking, no gas boiler to break down ~ oh the joys of coal and coke ~ you would probably be ill with some chest complaint due to the smog.....

I just looked that up because I remember, as a kid, the Clean Air Act coming into place in the UK. I have to admit to not being much of an environmentalist at the age of 6 but I remember the difference between burning coal and that of coke. I also remember the coalman, what a job that must have been. Funny though, the coalman was unfailingly cheerful, covered in coal dust, but cheerful. I wonder how his lungs were though.

It's really interesting to read the different views here. Interesting for me because I spent the first 15 years of my life living in London. But are we looking - as Bez indicates - at history through rose-tinted glasses. The memory of the emigre is notoriously suspect but I do remember the crappier bits of the UK in the 1950s. The Tories for a start. I remember when Wilson's Labour Party was elected and the mood of the country changed, well it changed before the election of course or Wilson wouldn't have made it. I was born under a Labour government and left the country under a Labour government but in the meantime those bloody Tories were governing. The last gasps of Empire, but the bloody ruling class managed to hang on.

Thanks Di.....the world has changed....we have to do the best with what we've got.

I agree about the tories....I have always had a better standard of living under Labour goverments.

I grew up in the 50s too and yes I also have happy memories of my childhood....but things have changed and we have to deal with it.

WE were the generation that wanted everything materialsitic as teenagers and young adults.....we wanted equality.....we were complicit in the age of 'free sex' without the responsibilities...if you care to analyse it (and I'm sure someone will) I guess our generation are responsible for the way the way the world is now.

Would you really want to give up Central heating, Washing machines, microwaves, supermarkets, womens equality, holidays abroad, etc. It's easy to be nostalgic and see things through 'rose coloured glasses.....

The school milk was warm and often sour, many children had unnecessary tonils out or were very ill after, infant mortality was higher .....sorry...it's nice to reminisce......but it was still a hard world.

what I DO miss from 'the old days' is the respect people had for each other, the feeling that we were safer, the discipline...
