Population control
I have been watching a program about India, they are soon to catch up with China's population and they are accelerating.
Is China correct in their strict population controls, should other countries adopt such
measures ?

What exactly are the controls in place for China? I'll go see what I can find and then criticize them:wah:

Each family is allowed one child.
In some ways it seems to be working, but it also seems like they have produced a nation of "Only Child" types.
Not sure that is a good thing.

So it is like a 1 for 2 stock split.
Is their population dropping that significantly?

Not sure that is a good thing. It's also brought It's own problems.

I recently read that there was like 10 million more births than deaths in China last year. I also read that the one child policy applied only to about 36% of the population. Mainly city/urban folk.
I wonder if womens birth control is free there, I would hope so. Sad situation but it seems they're between a rock and a hard place.
Believe it or not there is a lot of talk in Russia about all of the Chinese people emigrating to Siberia and Russias far east. Russia doesn't protest as long as the rules are followed but then they couldn't stop it either. Chinese peasants just go out into the wilderness and build a log house get their paperwork and start living. Whole towns are popping up in places. 20 years down the road it might become a problem, you don't necessarily have to use guns to conquer a country. Just move into it en mass like the Latin people are doing to the US.

Interesting statistics
I have a sneaking admiration for the stringent population controls in China.
To my mind they are looking after their future generations without considering spreading their territory to accommodate the growth.
Keeping your own house in order sort of idea.
I imagine it will take a generation or two for the culture change to become accepted and the wisdom to sink in, it is obviously the right thing to do long term.
The actual enforcement is frighteningly barbaric, but when weighing the alternatives, what are the alternatives ?

Population control
While I accept the arguments for the control of world population, there are very good practical reasons why people in the 3rd world have very large families. People in rural areas of Africa for example, survive on subsistence farming, with little or no access to welfare. The elderly therefore, have a heavy reliance on family to help them provide for them. Large extended families work the land to feed the older less able family members, those unable to work the land themselves. A large family is often a productive one.
It's very easy for us to dictate to people around the world, while we have a welfare system that allows us a reasonable retirement. Thankfully our grandparents do not rely on working the land to grow maize and can pop to the shops when they choose.

Population control
All of the anthropology textbooks say that as a nation develops a mature healthcare system, clean drinking water, etc., the birth rate will decline. It is no longer necessary to have many children to ensure that a few will survive. It takes a few generations for this to take effect, which is why immigrants from less developed countries tend to have far more children than those who have lived in more developed countries for generations.
As for government policies to restrict birth rates, I have yet to see a system that doesn't have some rather nasty side effects.

I think it's horrible that these kids are being put through this. I always want to reach out and do similar damage to the abusers when I see stories about stuff like this.
