The US has gone in to it's own little world that's why you can't understand that europeans having universal healthcare is not the result of socialist oppression but a conscious decision made by the electorate.
Suckers.
Most Europeans look at healthcare in the states and wonder why on earth you put up with it - we wouldn't.
It's so bad that Canadians flock across the border for health care by the thousands.
On the other hand, I like getting the health care I want when I want it. BTW, ANYONE can walk / crawl /drive /by ambulance into any hospital emergency room and get immediate top flight care ...for free... if they're unable to pay. It's the law.
Here's a fine anecdotal article about an American's experience with British socialized health care. I'll pass, thanks.
An Up Close and Personal Taste of Socialized Medicine - Business And Money | Business News | Financial News - FOXNews.com
Our current health care legislation is little more than a power grab. Control of funds means power.
To have a popular movement calling for no social reform and lower taxes for the rich while your country goes bankrupt fighting foreign wars and bankers get a bail out while workers get laid off is a peculiarly American phenomenon.
Then feel free not to concern yourself with it.
You use left and right in an American context the rest of the world, not being american does not. Left and right is the same as the have and have nots and what is fair and what is not.
No. Wrong again.
A kwik thumbnail sketch of the political spectrum starts on the far right with anarchism. As the line moves left the first stop is libertarian (UK Independence Party) (here, they would be strict Constitutionalists and strong personal freedoms) and then on to Conservative which is basically what I've described previously as free markets with govt acting as the enforcer of equilibrium. I don't think that England has a comparable movement such as this. Moving farther to the left we reach a center point, which by definition is the average position of the this society in the whole. Beyond that we get to fascism (some rightly or wrongly refer to as corporatism) and then further left is socialism and communism. The spectrum is delineated as no govt and complete freedom thru lack of law on the far right thru a progression to authoritarian and complete govt control. There is no possible way in the political spectrum that fascism given the extensive govt control can be right of center. I've never seen it explained away. Sorry.
You seem to be brainwashed in to thinking social change is not something you can demand of your government.
Unlike y'all, we have a written Constitution. It limits the powers of govt. My position is a Constitutional position and has nothing to do with brainwashing...but please use a gentle spin cycle, thanks.
but anyone advocating social justice and let's not destroy the environment is a left wing tree hugging commie bastard.
If you mean social justice by balancing the powers of the people, that we can agree on. If by social justice you mean to take from the producers and to provide for the takers, again thanks, but I'll pass.
It's your problem I just wish you would sort it out and stop trying to tell everybody where they have got it wrong. Does it make you feel better or something?
It does sadden me somewhat that people who should know better, don't.
OK. I won't discuss what a mess socialism is if all the leftists on here will stop whining about not enough free stuff. Deal?
hence I can think for myself and really am not impressed by academics producing coloured diagrams
I wrongly thought that pictures would help. My mistake. Pictures are for the illiterate. They won't help the willfully stupid.
More to the point living in a free country I can call such things a load of bollocks if I want to.
Just so you'll know; the more govt you have the less personal freedoms you will enjoy. It just works out that way. Sorry.
Another oddity about left / right. The further you move left the more social violence you're apt to experience. Witness the purges of Stalin and Mao and currently the the leftist Egyptian govt assaulting what was a rather peaceful uprising on the side of personal freedom.

Would some leftist tell me what to think, please?
Are the Islamafascists like Hamas, Muslim Brothrehood, etc. a right or left movement?
Thanks.
I'll hang up now and listen for your answer.

Umm a spokesperson from the islamist brotherhood (moderists) who was interviewed didn't want the world to think they are taking over and don't want the crap that is happening right now in the country because they themselves are nervous about extremism ...You have to understand that Egypt has warded off extremist islamists for some time now. And the "brotherhood" are not wanting sharia or any islamist state. ...it's about democracy.

Okay I'm gunna take a punt here ..you're a ****wit ...To begin with ...if an american went to egypt to live for a year they would have no problem . If and egyptian went to america to live for 12 months....no problem .
Now if I was to say to you, you have to put up with the current government for the next 30 years ...would you be pulling up the stones from the streets ( a very cultural demonstration in this instance) to get rid of a government? you would ...no denying it .....you're a **** stirrer ...people in this country are angry .both christian and muslim and what ever else is subject to that country .
Of all the countrys in the middle east you want to **** off right now, it's not egypt!!! they have a long history with us .......GMC (could you correct me here did american soldiers go to egypt to train troupes during ww2? I'm not sure ....does america have any affinity or understanding of some of the countries in this region?)???????????

Second, do you honestly believe that because a religious forum exists that people have stopped posting in ALTR's fun & fluffy free-for-alls?? If we only had censorship then we could all be free to be happy?? REALLY?

Whose getting demoralised? You don't need to read threads or somebody's posts if you don't want to. It's no fun if we all agree with each other and you can disengage at any time. If there was no religion or politics and people willing to argue I for one would lose interest - no loss I hear you say[img]http://www.runemasterstud. Mind you when someone just keeps repeating themselves rather than discourse it gets a bit wearing.

No they didn't. Egypt was a de facto british colony until ostensibly 1922 but british troops stayed there until after ww2. It was too important to britain to leave. It was british and commonwealth troops against first the italians and then the germans, america didn't enter the war till it was about half way through and weren't really involved in africa and the middle east until 1942. What egypt wanted didn't really come in to it. European history with the middle east is not particularly edifying, first it was trade with India (suez canal and all that) and then it was all about oil. Russia and Britain invaded Iran in 1941 to prevent them siding with the germans and keep control of the oil fields. The US kind of got involved in the area after that and stayed around after that for much the same reason i.e. oil. The whole of western involvement has always been about control and access to resources. The US kind of took over the mantle of the european empires and continued in similar vein if without the naked use of force until recently. Add israel to the mix and you have a boiling pot that is still going. Islamic fundamentalism is just one of the results.

Meanwhile western economists still hold to the insane idea that inflation can be controlled by controlling the cost of money and call for interest rates to rise (well they do here anyway). I think fifty years from now people will look back and ask wtf were we thinking. It's like looking at the lead up to ww1, from our perspective it was collecticve insanity that wiped out a generation. Factor in rising transport costs as well. Might be good in the long run if the west start looking to make things in their own countries currently we manufacture abroad to save production costs to make goods to import back in to sell to people who are worried sick about losing their jobs. Except all that imported food and manufacture is costing more to transport about.
I think you will see more riots and demonstrations across europe in the months to come - demonstrations always increase in the good weather. Don't know about the states you don;t seem to get angry at your government in quite the ame way.

BTW, looks like Mubarak may step down today.
So, power vacuum? Your outlook, please!

I think it will depend what the army does. There are odd reports of them laying in to protestors. If I was a protestor I think the concern would be that if they give up the state will come after the ringleaders once they are seperated from the crowds and things will go on as usual with no real change.

Some of the american reports I have seen seem (I get cnn and occasionally watch others on you tube) to be emphasising what would happen if a fundamentalist state was created. If Munarek doesn't go then the next stage will be more extreme.

Several former military and intelligence officials are arguing publicly that Israel must be prepared to reoccupy Gaza, or at least a wide swath of the enclave along its eight-mile border with Egypt. Other experts counsel caution, warning that such an operation would plunge Israel into years of fighting.
Israel should probably keep quiet on the subject of succession. There are always those that advocate pre-emptive force to prevent attack and then wonder why they keep getting in to wars. If israel does invade gaza or anywhere else the whole middle east would erupt. How would you feel about full scale warfare in the middle east caused by israeli pre-emptive attacks? The effect on your economy would be catastrophic.

I think this may be just beginning. Some countries are taking prudent steps and hoarding as they see hard times ahead. I think there will be a lot of small scale conflict. As for Egypt I don't think it will go in the favor of the US, I think the ME is going to lose some of that precious stability that has kept it afloat for so long. I really think America needs to hunker down, stop immigration, start working towards self sufficiency again. We're too dependent on a rotting world infrastructure.
I read last night that Russia is opening up a lot more land for farming this year but it will take some time to get all of the gear in place. Kazakhstan is too but they're simply looking to feed their neighborhood. They couldn't care less about Egyptians.

As for Egypt I don't think it will go in the favor of the US, I think the ME is going to lose some of that precious stability that has kept it afloat for so long. I really think America needs to hunker down, stop immigration, start working towards self sufficiency again. We're too dependent on a rotting world infrastructure.

Interesting times we live in. This carting food all around the world is going to have to stop. You know we import flowers from africa - from a continent where people are starving to death.

And to add to that how many flower farms over the years have went out of business in Britain. Maybe we should not grow so many flowers or only the types that are edible? Lots of mouths to feed.

Actually the states imports a lot as well.
I think Mubarek will try and hang on and them regain his stranglehold and if the army don't turf him out soon what will follow won't be very edifying.

Egypt's controversial emergency laws have been in place since the assassination of President Anwar Sadat in 1967 and give the government far-reaching powers at the expense of judicial review and civil liberties.

We don't know that he is quitting, he just ran to one of his mansions. Maybe he needs to check out the estates in DC in peace. How about next door to the chimp?

Dood, I have zero respect for obummer but your racist remark referring to him as a chimp is absolutely uncalled for.

Nice try.
Anyway the big question now is what is going to happen in Egypt. We all know about Osama Bin Laden and Napoleon. You don't mess with the status quo.

I personally don't have a problem with calling anyone a chimp because, as a species, we're close enough. So it's not an insult AFAIC.

The west and particularly the states now has a problem. If you laud a left wing movement for democracy in egypt while at the same time the in the palestinians elections the results are overturned in favour of one more suitable for western and israeli interests the hypocrisy becomes even more evident. Wikileaks has revealed just how far the palestinians went to make peace and the israelis said no and the palestinian leadership has lost any credibility. So if there are similar peaceful demonstrations in palestine life should get interesting.

I don't think so, so long as the money keeps flowing to the Egyptian general staff. I think the people will see some changes but not many. I suspect the US taxpayers will be forking over a little more too.

This is different in that it is being driven by ordinary people who are able to communicate, organise and discuss in a way never before possible using media governments and corporations are not quite able to control as they like. There's no head to be lopped off. Be interesting to see how it will all pan out. It wouldn't surprise me if you start seeing similar things in Iran.
Also I was referring to palestine. You can't laud democracy in ine country and condemn and overthrow the result of it in another. Well OK they have been but it might be a bit harder to get away with it now.

So what do you think she will say to the israelis if the palestinians start peaceful protests?
BBC News - Clinton expresses US support for Iran protesters
We are against violence and we would call to account the Iranian government that is once again using its security forces and resorting to violence to prevent the free expression of ideas from their own people," she said.
I don't suppose she gets the irony of that either.

Anyway I caught a blurb on the radio about Benghazi Libya. I guess the army has been pretty rough there and a lot of people have been killed. It seems the people are arming themselves, they're getting guns somewhere. Anyone hear anything else? The information coming out is sparse.

Looks like bahrain govt is backing down because the demonstrators aren't- maybe when push comes to shove they can't trust the army to really open up on their own countrymen.
Libya is interesting, looks like sections of the army are joining in against gaddafi.

It seems to be that way, an army group apparently turned their tanks on some security forces held up in their barracks. Word is getting out and there are reports of Egyptians getting aid convoys together. Up to 200 have been killed. This is going to be interesting. If Gadaffi has leave where exactly will he go?

Here's a very informative video from Al Jazeera. This guy and his family sit on 75% of North Africas known oil reserves. That's about 47.3 billion barrels in the ground. How much of that goes to Europe? I've seen a 5% rise in gas prices here (Seattle) in just the last week.
Try wrapping your mind around just how dependent the western world is on oil and you'll see why so many of our leaders are so willing to lick this guys feet. I'm glad I maintain my trusty Schwinn too.

BREAKING NEWS | Libyan fighter jets, helicopters land in Malta
At least two Libyan air force fighter jets have landed in Malta after reportedly fleeing Libya.
The planes landed at MIA without authorization and the pilots have surrendered to the Maltese authorities. The planes have reportedly escaped from Benghazi where the air base has been looted and destroyed by demonstrators.
Just a blurb, there was also a couple of choppers.

I don't need to try it's dictated foreign policy in the region for more than a century. It will be interesting if saudi arabia starts going the same way with mass protests calling for democracy. All the west can do is wait and watch what happens.
