Since I'm looking more and more like the Michelin tire man, I decided to try this no meat, no dairy diet. It sounds almost too good to be true. But, WTF?

Seems likes it's a go for a beer and potato chip diet :wah: Only teasing with you Hoppy. Before you start any diet, you should check with your doctor. This diet does not sound healthy to me. Also with any weight loss regiment exercise is also very important. That old saying comes to mind: if it sounds too good to be true it probably isn't.

White meat, like chicken and turkey, is better than red meat, less fattening.

Could you walk once a day? That burns off quite a few calories, and you could take it at your own pace. Maybe you could ask your doctor to recommend physical therapy or a trainer that would work with your limitations, and come up with a workout regimen. Yoga might help, too.

Hoppy has said that his back, knees and hips are worn out, so he cannot excercise, I imagine that he would not be able to do yoga either, given that his knees are bad.
Hoppy you've set quite a puzzle here! Looks like it's a minimum carbohydrate and fat diet for you, and possibly excercising with arm excercises only. I know how you feel about back and hip deterioration, and I sympathise Hoppy, but at least I can excercise a bit.

Hoppy, everyone can exercise in one form or another. Have you talked to your doctor about this?

I keep telling doc I can't stand very long or walk very far but he ignores me. A walker might be an answer though. Maybe one with a stick attached with a can of beer tied to the end of the stick. I would chase that can all day.:yh_rotfl
Seriously though, I am thinking walker. Might as well look like an old fart even more.:wah:

just try lowering your intake of meals, cutting back on portions is a huge reward.
If you find your still hungry, have some fruit, low-fat snacks.

id start by getting a different doctor since hes not listening to what you are saying
have you thought about swimming.......the water might help support you and its good for cardio
im asthmatic and have a dodgy back (had spinal surgery a few years back) and i found swimming helped as long as i could go at the pace i wanted to.....and not that of the ex-wife who swam like a fish!

How far can you walk? Maybe just around the block? Make a very small goal for yourself, and gradually increase-like on a weekly basis.
Cut your caloric and carbohydrate consumption for weight loss.
If your doctor doesn't listen to you, do you have the option for choosing another one?

If that helps you Hoppy, to achieve your goal, then what the hell does it matter what you look like or what people think - arseholes to them!
Yep, change your doc, or at least get a second opinion.

There are walkers that have a seat incorporated in the framework, so you could sit down for a while, if your back starts to ache too much. I have a friend who has motor neurone and he has a walker with a seat, and it also has a shopping tray, so he can carry bags as well. He is so chuffed with it, as it helps him to get about a lot more than he used to.

My suggestion would be Water Exercise
I'm very limited to mobility also. The bouyancy from the water is wonderful and at times I'm pain free - will actually make you feel better and move those joints without pressure.
Replace alot of your daily intake of foods (Carbs) with a fruit or vegetable.
Reduce your meat intake to a couple of times a week
Stop eating Fried Foods & coated foods, foods that are breaded/covered with any flour recipe, and with water exercise you'll see a difference in time..!!
Good Luck
Now I need to follow my own advise..:wah:

A doctor who doesn't listen to you is a doctor to replace. IMO

Good for you!! I know how hard it is for me to get motivated.. I have an old back injury, a recent hamstring injury. My knees are starting to feel the consequences of working on my feet on concrete floors for 30 years. It's too easy to try to protect those aches and pains. I like the idea of water therapy - I like to swim and always feel so revitalised, just from paddling around, soaking up some sun.
Rock on, Hoppy!

Good Luck on this Hoppy,
A friend of mine is going through similar, she reduced her portions, and added in more fruit and vegies and grains. And is loosing weight slowly.
If I could offer a bit of personal advise, don't cut out your red meat completely, trim it well and reduce portions. It is still your best source of iron.
Also drink loads of water, this does a number of things, fills you up, hydrates you and offers up some easy exercise as you are forced to get up and go to the bathroom way more times during the day and night :yh_rotfl

Hi Hoppy.
I suggest swimming too. No impact. Perhaps you can join a Local pool and do water exercises if you aren't a good swimmer.
Also cycling. U need Low or No impact. Do you have a bike? If not why not buy one? A comphy Beach bike, padded seat, with a carage for a nap sack ( you can do some shopping). U don't have to get a racer, ten speed or mountain bike.
Also if you want to spend the bucks or join a Gym, an eliptical trainer is no impact.

Yes, I bought a three wheeler but my knees won't allow me to peddal it. I thought about adding a small gas or electric motor. But so far, it's parked in my daughter's garage beside grandson's race car. She rode it a few times.

I agree with all of the advice you have received.
I'm a semi-vegan. I don't eat dairy at all, but I allow myself four meals per week that include meat. I also take iron and calcium supplements. And butter, not margarine because your body needs some fat everyday.
Water exercise is a good idea. If you can walk one block, keep doing that adding a little more distance every week.
Take the long way around: When you move from room to room in your house, walk to a wall and go in and out of every room following the walls to get to the room you wanted to go to in the first place. It's a simple way to add more steps to your day.
Got to a store like K-Mart, Wallmart, or Meijer's and take a basket and walk around the store. The basket gives you something to hold on to and you could get a good 30 minute walk in by walking up each aisle.
Change doctors. If you have one that does not listen to you, he is not acting in your best interests.
