I want to be Independant...

Post by David Hill »

...but I'm having trouble. See my Dad is heavily right wing, and I guess the way I was raised makes me want to agree with his veiws. But I know I need to have an open mind, but with little time on my hands between football, and a very demanding school it seems hard to have the time to keep up with the current news, and learning history ("Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it" or however it goes)

So any advice to how I can start thinking more independantly? and deciding for myself what I beleive in?

You know, it's o.k. to agree with your dad. But i agree that we all hope to be independent thinkers. One way to find your own way is to listen to others opinions, then work out for yourself why you do or don't agree. If you find yourself always thinking,'that's not what my dad says', then you need to branch out a little to an uncle, a teacher, or your mother. But try to really analyze your dad's opinions also. If you have been brought up with a strict, conservative value system, you will most likely adhere to those beliefs until and unless you get away from them for awhile. Getting away doesn't mean your ideas will change however, that only gives you a chance to try out other ideas in a different environment.

As you mature, you are bound to have a few 'new' ideas that your dad will frown on. We all did (and he did too). But further age may bring you in a full circle right back to where your dad is today.

Another old saying is 'THe apple doesn't fall far from the tree":-6

independance...lovely thought esspecially in a school environment.

when your told day after day:

"Stop talking, do your work, face the front and my favourite TUCK THAT SHIRT IN!"

independance is a wonderful idea that seems to be achieved by adults, i'd like to be more independant too but untill people recognize that you can make your own decisions all you can do is hold on to your own beliefs and wait.

or just be a rebel whichever works for you.
