Earthquake Occurrences Are Increasing
The U.S. Geological Survey has reported that 13 aftershocks followed Friday's 7.6-magnitude earthquake in Pakistan. All of them were between 5.5 and 6.3 in magnitude which are very strong for aftershocks.
The U.S. Geological Survey data indicates earthquake occurrences are increasing. In 2000, there were 22,256 recorded earthquakes worldwide. That number has steadily increased to 31,199 earthquakes in 2004.

Earthquake Occurrences Are Increasing
Hi All,
here's a link to a site I found the other day that makes it really easy to see at a glance what's happenin around the world on a daily/weekly basis.
it a bit like a one stop shop for earthquake activity and news all in one.

Earthquake Occurrences Are Increasing
Clint wrote: The U.S.
A lot of money is spent on research into earthquakes, as we cannot yet predict acurately when and where an earthquake will occur, or where it will register on the Richter scale.
The best we can do at the moment is to record and measure any slight tremors within the earths crust. You will probably find that the majority of those 'earthquakes' recorded are extremely low on the Richter scale, on a level which only a delicate, specially tuned, seismic monitor can pick up. They are probably actually slight resettlement movements within the earths crust, rather than actual earthquakes, per se.
I would imagine that the increase in 'earthquakes' is, in actual fact, just our ability to pick up even more of the miniscually slight tremors as we invent ever more receptive and highly tuned seismic monitors.
Perhaps once a seismic monitor would sense a pebble rolling down a hill, whereas now it can sense when a butterfly spreads its wings.
Also, earthquake zones in the Western world are highly monitored. Building codes are very strict and all larger buildings are being retrofitted with special materials which allow the buildings to sway rather than collapse, as the ground shakes.
In poorer third world countries, there are no building codes. People often build their houses from any bricks or corrugated metal or other materials that they find. They are allowed to build wherever they please and are not warned if it is an earthquake zone or a flood plain.
This is why an earthquake in California will kill a handful of people and an earthquake in Pakistan or India will kill thousands. The majority are killed when poorly constructed buildings collapse on them. Also, the death toll will increase when the water table becomes contaminated from all the bodies left to deteriorate in the hot sun. They have no action plan to deal with earthquakes and their aftermath, so many more people suffer and die. Californians, however, DO have plans of action to follow. Following an earthquake they quickly send ambulances to the affected zones and they quickly supply clean drinking water, food and blankets and medical aid to everyone. That is why the death toll is so low and earthquakes affect the few people caught up in the initial quake and subsequent aftershocks and doesn't continue to affect them for months afterwards, apart from doing rebuilding work.
sorry, I got a bit carried away with this.
The U.S. Geological Survey data indicates earthquake occurrences are increasing. In 2000, there were 22,256 recorded earthquakes worldwide. That number has steadily increased to 31,199 earthquakes in 2004.

That and we have been very fortunate in the timing of these large quakes.........most have seemed to take place early AM hours on weekends and holidays.....even the Oakland quake(weekday rush hour) in northern Calif was somewhat lessened with casualties because people were at home watching the World Series.

I hadn't even noticed it, which is weird considering how close the Bay Area is... god, those photos of the bridge scared the crap out of me! Can you imagine being on that bridge when it collapsed?
No, I can't imagine being on any kind of bridge period. I don't like them.:-2

You and Carla should know it, somebody else from SD here isn't there?

Clint's listing missed some.
Last week: offshore Mentor, Ohio, in Lake Erie, we had another 2.5 quake. It is the 4th one since November.
This area is not considered 'earthquake territory', so I think this is significant.
