Mom Calls Police After Children Fight Over Pacifier

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Normally, a fight between two children over a pacifier might be resolved by their mothers.

But in Pawtucket, the police had to step in.

It all started Monday afternoon, when a 6-year-old boy dropped a pacifier. Another 6-year-old boy picked it up and refused to give it back, allegedly prompting the first child to deliver a punch. Police said the boy with the pacifier then punched back.

Pawtucket Police Detective Donti Rosciti said one of the mothers called police, saying she wanted the fist fight documented because her son had three minor scratches on his face, and she didn't want his school accusing her of abuse.

A patrolman wrote up a report, then went to the home of the other child to speak with his parents, Rosciti said. He called the case very unusual.

"I've never seen a report with two kids this young," he said.

Rosciti said that as far as police are concerned, the matter is over.

"A 6-year-old can't be held criminally responsible," he said.

Not at 6, I hope.

But you do see teens with them -- they are the kids who do drugs at raves.

Now let's just take a look at this here, I think this parent of the pacifier kid is really out to lunch,

1) allowing her kid a pacifier at 6,

2) allowing the pacifier to go to school

3) calling the cops when she is incapable of managing this herself.

Yeah looks like your typical parent that refuses to take control of their kid.

Pacifier wouldn't be permitted at the schools here at any age.

Nope, 6 yr old can't be held responsible...but I do see the point of documenting the scratches. Nowadays parents have to watch out for abuse allegations.

Don't laugh. They have licenses for operating a car, don't they? And raising a child is infinitely more complicated than driving a car. Worse yet, the consequences for society if it is done wrong are far worse.

I had a mom once tell me in a parent / teacher conference, "I can't tell my daughter to get out of bed in the morning. She'd punch holes in the walls!" I gave her a steely-eyed glare and told her in no uncertain terms, "You are the parent, she is your child, take care of your responsibilites."

Yesterday, in line at Walmart, a 6-year old was repeated slamming the doors to the Coke refridgerator near the register and screaming at the top of his lungs. His mother stood nearby, either uncaring or oblivious to this tirade.

After about 20 minutes of this, everyone in line had had enough of his noise and rudeness. Finally, I turned to the boy and in a loud, clear voice, told him, "That's enough of that, young man!" (And believe me, when I turn on the "command tone" people listen.)

The shocked little boy ran to his mother and everyone else in line laughed and applauded.

The mother got defensive and scolded me with, "I don't see how it's any of your business disciplining my son." I told her, "Well someone needed to and since you refused to do it, I stepped up."

Oh, I'm laughing, all right. What would the punishment be for breeding without a license? I'm certainly not willing to allow the gov't into that territory.

By the way, good on you for stepping up. *thumbs up*
