Gone Fishing

Going up north fishing for a couple of days,the attached image is of the Queens View, Loch Tummel, I will be fishing at the head of the loch, its a really nice part of Scotland at this time of year with all the autumn colour, its also the only place I have seen Red Squirrel in the wild.

It looks so beautiful, Scotty. I was interested to read that it's called Queen's View because it was visited by Queen Victoria, and Mary Queen of Scots. The life of the latter queen fascinates me.

...Theia, ever read 'royal road to fotheringay'? i've always been fascinated with Mary Stuart also.

No, LC, I haven't. It's only over the past 9 months or so that I've developed this fascination. It began, strangely enough, with a Fairport Convention track I discovered (Fotheringay), the words of which are so beautifully poignant. Then a work colleague who is an avid follower of the history of the royals told me more about Mary's life and I determined to find out more for myself when the opportunity arose. Would you say royal road could be a good starting point? And what fascinates you? To me she appears to have been a very strong, sensual woman whose freedom and ultimately life were taken away. And was she victor or victim?

Theia i don't want to sidetrack Scotty's thread, but i've had a fascination with history for my entire adult life...there are many good books out there, but yes start with that one. but there is a quintessential tome entitled "Mary Queen of Scots" by antonia fraser, the best one i think...your library will have lots i'm sure.

Liked the one of Craigmillar primary school. West Lothian has some nice new primary schools for much the same reason.

Can never see the fun in fishing, I'm away up to Kintail for some hill walking.

I read Jean Plaidy as a kid, those are good novels for light reading historical fiction.

(one of the reviews I read said that it is valuable to read the "fictional" stuff first to give one a light overview? Then move on to the more serious?)

... then start a thread in history forum about her and her famous cousin who signed her death warrant, Elizabeth I. i could bang on all day about that stuff! ...Scotty, i am thinking of you catching huge salmon now!!

LC, my colleague is lending me the antonia fraser over the next couple of days as a starter. He may also have the plaidy but he's not sure. He read somewhere that E1 was reluctant to sign Mary's death warrant? Anyway, a definite future library thread. (Of course! "Bothwell!!")

It's a fishing thread but i can't help it. Elizabeth, held the death warrant for several months before signing mainly it is though because she thought it contravened the Divine right of Kings (or Queens) but when you have an advisor such as Walsingham you don't get away with much.

She had to go, simple as that, whether she was implicated in the Babington plot is a moot point, she would surely plead entrapment nowadays, the "casket" letters were also taken as proof of her duplicitous nature although the origin of those letters is somewhat tainted.

What is known from contemporary writings is that Elizabethwas not happy with how the execution was conducted, Mary was denied a Catholic priest and in fact as she tried to prey the Protestant minister attending started shouting his prayers to drown her out, her rosary was removed from her and it took 2 swipes of the axe to finish her off. the final indignity was when the executioner held up her severed head to utter the required "Here is the head of a traitor" her resplendant red wig fell off to expose short cropped grey hair. it is also said her eyes could be seen fluttering for several minutes after decapitation.

Thanks for all the kind comments regarding my fishing trip.

I had a great time away with my 2 brothers, sadly we never caught any fish :-1 we had a couple of takes but missed both times, LOL I suppose there is always one that gets away :wah: .

We stayed in lovely hotel called the struan inn , which is located on the Duke of Atholls estate, the area abounds with stunning scenery and wild life , it really makes up for not catching any fish.

I was also interested in what some of you said about Mary Queen of Scots, I dont think I mentioned when I posted my photo of Craigmillar castle, that this was the castle where MQS fled after the murder of Rizzo, It was also here that the Regent Moray, Bothwell and William Maitland of Lethington plotted Darnleys murder.

Its funny to think back that when I was a kid I used play hide and seek there, little did I know of the events that went before me.

Was she complicit? Bang to rights as we would say over here, lucky that she was "Kidnapped" by my namesake. She was by all accounts a saucy trollop
