I live in Houston so I'm very concerned about this. Where I live, our house can withstand up to a Category 3 storm. We should probably consider evacuating if there is the chance it could become a category 4 storm.
DANGER!I drive like you do.

hi, i just answered your other post...a house may be able to withstand cat 3 winds, but NOT flooding. are you under evac order? if so, PLEASE do, your safety comes first! this is nothing to take lightly, keep a close eye tomorrow and listen to your local authorities if they say get out...and keep us informed if you do go...best of luck to you! :-6

Hey Susie, don't panic, they are getting lots of information and may have already evacuated the area. let us know when you talk to them. there's plenty of time for them to leave for safety.

I pray for everyone in the Texas/Louisiana area. My family used to live along the Mississippi Gulf Coast & my father is still there. I know how devastating this can be. Please take all warnings very seriously... if they say get out, LISTEN!

sept. 8, 1900, a hurricane hit galveston and killed 8000 people. it was the worst hurricane in history. this monster 'cane is aimed at galveston. fortunately the people had seen what happened in new orleans and are evacuating. there will be a great deal of destruction, galveston is just a sandbar with a seawall. rita is now ranked as the third most intense 'cane in recorded history. this is serious.

Rita exodus jams Texas roads
Cars are bumper-to-bumper on I-45 near downtown Houston today.
Hundreds of thousands of people in Texas and Louisiana headed inland today as Hurricane Rita moved toward the Gulf Coast. But many weren't getting far. Houston resident Tim Conklin said he had been stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for 13 hours and made it only 48 miles. On the main road between Houston and Austin, people were pushing their cars and minivans to save gas.

they've started reversing the southbound lanes into Houston to northbound lanes. That'll double the size of the artery out.

I am 250 miles inland and we are forecasted to still have CAT 1 winds when Rita comes through here on Sunday. We expect to lose power ...and have rain

LC, that storm is getting worse as the day goes on, the kids ask to see it, and I put the weather.com up for them to see it. I hope everyone down there will be all right.

Oh pity those who have been evacuated out of Louisiana et al and back into the path of another disaster. We can only wish safety for everyone.

Rita eyes two-state punch
An estimated 1.8 million people are being told to evacuate Gulf Coast communities as Hurricane Rita threatens a large swath of Texas and Louisiana. Many Texan evacuees were caught in traffic jams and the state opened southbound carriageways to northbound traffic. Rita remains extremely dangerous despite being downgraded to a Category 4 storm. It is forecast to make landfall Saturday between Galveston, Texas, and the Texas-Louisiana border.... NOTE: they have NOT opened those lanes! there is a one-hundred mile traffic jam and many have run out of gas.

Gosh, with the gridlock they barely will have time to get away. When these storms have passed, they need to reevaluate how to evacuate major cities of this size. Thanks for the pic and news story LC.

i am STILL getting bands, this baby is huge.
Hurricane Rita continues to spin toward the Texas-Louisiana coast, with forecasters saying the Category 4 storm could strengthen before making landfall early Saturday. Some areas of both states already are experiencing Rita's outer rain bands. As thousands of residents try to flee the storm, the Texas National Guard is dispatching tanker trucks to help motorists who have run out of gas on jammed freeways.

........they are going to cover it all night, the thing is going to hit in a couple hours and there's going to be plenty of damage. some neighborhoods in new orleans are already flooded, and they are only getting bands.
