What does Evil look like?

Post by lady cop »

i will tell you it's not a face in my experience, it's dead shark eyes. i have seen stupid, and criminal, and sometimes, not often, true evil. i know it when i see it. i have looked in the eyes of a serial killer who is as polite as a boy scout. but i see the killer in there. i have seen this in a few females and it almost shocked me. it's not a physical type, it's in the eyes.

interesting question. while reading it, i thought to myself 'geeze, a face for evil. nah, evil's a philosophical concept' - and then i realized is was just bullshitting myself.

here's the face that came into my mind first when thinking of evil.

since we have a worldwide audience here at FG any many are not likely familiar with him, that's Richard Allen Davis. he kidnapped a 12 year old girl from her home while her mother was sleeping. she was having a slumber party with a couple of her friends. this took place in the town just south of where i live, maybe fifteen miles away.

he raped and murdered her, dumping her body alongside a freeway about a hundred miles away. he was caught about six weeks later. he never expressed any remorse. the photo is of him shortly after he was sentenced to death. after the verdict was read, he turned around, mouthed a blown kiss to the girl's father, then flipped him off, as the photo shows.

this is evil. i'd really, really love to hear any apologist or ethical relativist try to tell me that there's something redeemable about this person.

in court, when davis was sentenced, he made the comment "she asked me not to do her like her daddy did" which made her grandmother sob and her father go crazy. the filthy swine. then he gave the court the fingers. he now has a website from death row where he asks for sympathy and pen pals, and tries to sell his "art" ...he is the most disgusting excuse for a human in san quentin.

This is pure evil - the Beast that used to live all too near to my home, serving 11 consecutive life sentences.

If you don't know, he is Clifford Olson, serial killer, but is really the best argument for the death penalty.Olson

Absolutely right, LC. I've seen a few evil killers come down the line myself. You can actually see it in their eyes at an early age.

I once had a kid that sat in the back row of my class and when I looked into his eyes, I thought.."This kid is truly evil." Dead Shark Eyes. Seething evil, just waiting for a chance to come out. I knew then that he would somday kill someone. But what can you do about it? Tell his parents, 'Oh, by the way, I think your child will grow up to be a killer."

Sure enough, a few years later, he raped and killed a girl at a party. The second I saw his face in the paper I remembered what I had thought those many years earlier. He's on death row in Arizona now.

These days, I know evil whenever I see it. But I still have the same old problem..what to do? :-2

I will answer your question with two more questions:

What exactly is 'evil'?

Is this universe populated exclusively by 'humanity'?

Whaddya think?

I see I've found a fellow misanthrope perhaps. So I guess we are all evil? And no, I dont believe I will be going to any religious forums in whats left of my lifetime.

To me it is very simple we are all born, at the very least, self centered. It is a learned and conditioned response to over come the natural propensity to do evil.

No one taught me how to lie, cheat or steal. But I did have to learn that those things are wrong.

So when I see evil mainfest itself it has always been through a human heart.

This sounds like some kind of Neo-Puritanism or something. I take it youre a big believer in Original Sin?

Of course 'evil' manifests itself thru the human heart, being as humans are the only sentients on Earth.

I think we are all born innocent. The "evil" you mention as a natural trait or 'instinct', initiated by oneself, such as lying, cheating, stealing, are, for the most part, done not with "evil" intent through hurtful actions. Rather, they are done moreso with immature selfish motivations. "Evil" would mean an action done despite the full awareness of the grievous immoral nature of the deed.

The phrase "kids can be co cruel" is said often, because the young can not always understand or fully appreciate how greatly their actions can effect others. Empathy toward others is a natural human trait, but people who don't show it are in actuality suppressing it, not lacking it.

If aliens exist and were to come here and slaughter us by the millions, that too would be considered "evil" by humans, despite the fact they are not human.

All imo of course!

It might help the discussion if 'evil' could be defined. Needless to say, that is not as easy as it seems. From what little I can recall from the Philosophy courses I took back in the day, 'evil' is simply defined as 'the absence of good'. I'm not implying that this is the only way to look at it. Anybody else like to take a stab at what 'evil' is defined as?

Sorry OP!

Hmmm definition of evil? Good question. I'll have to ponder it some.

Yes, perhaps that was a bit rude. Cant say that I'm known for good manners. Maybe I am just 'evil' :sneaky: Just kidding Rider, and my apologies to the original sinner, er..I mean poster.
