Covid-19 is spiking . . . .
. . . . . Again, as expected due to "re-opening" the world from "lockdown"!
It is a sorry state of affairs that we all are in here in the USA, as well as I'm sure the rest of the world is too.
A vaccine can not come soon enough! Hopefully it will be sooner than later!

I'll be interested to discover whether I trust it when one is offered.
On the other hand, I'm a volunteer for human trials if the UK ever runs any. That's not the same thing at all.

Things have settled down in Colorado. Our numbers are looking fairly good.
Of course that could change after all the protests and such.
We'll see.

Everyone is going to get it anyway. Locking everything down was supposedly to slow the virus so that the hospitals don't get overwhelmed, but once that was achieved, the Democrats wanted to keep things closed as long as possible to crush the economy.
No matter when you re open things, the numbers of cases are going to spike, but since it has now been proven what I have been saying all along, that the chances are dying of it really are no higher than dying from the flu, we shouldn't worry about it. I'm not. My brother works with a man who just tested positive for the virus, he and his whole family and they didn't even know they had it. Never got sick.

Shelter in place, Social distancing, wearing face masks in public, and frequently washing hands has mainly proved to slow/ stop the spread of the virus.xfrodobagginsx wrote: ↑Sun Jun 14, 2020 3:02 pm Everyone is going to get it anyway. However, people being foolish people, they just can't remain vigilant to continue with the inconvenience of continuing with the above, even when their lives depend on it.
Some people are lucky, and don't get sick easily, while other people who have compromised auto immune systems will get the virus and "die alone" in the hospital, with no visitors, and same with their burial!

The New York antibody study is, I think, currently the largest scale mortality study to have reported and that gave a mortality rate of about 1.3% overall so you’re right, not far off that for the flu.xfrodobagginsx wrote: ↑Sun Jun 14, 2020 3:02 pm Everyone is going to get it anyway. Trouble is that it’s a new virus with no immunity in the general population so if, as you say, everybody is going to get it that’s roughly one hundred million dead. Four million in the US, one million in the UK.
Far from wanting to “crush the economy” i think politicians around the world are trying to keep the death toll down as it looks bad on their record if they loose that many citizens.

If it really were about keeping the death toll down, why are Democrat Governors forcing COVID19 senior patients into nursing homes and not allowing the nursing home to refuse them or them to go to the hospital? Two examples would be Cuomo of NY and Whitmer of MI. Why aren't they closing everything down for the flu or other more deadly illnesses? Why did the Democrats cheer on and participate in MASS protest crowds across the US with no Social Distancing and not express any concern for it, but were troubled by the Social Distancing concerns when the Republicans protested the excessive quarantines? If COVID19 were really that big of a threat, then they wouldn't have had these double standards. It was REALLY about keeping the economy closed to hurt it so that they can try to keep Trump from being elected and push Socialism.

Here's a discussion of the 1daysooner initiative and the background ethics dilemma. The linked WHO 19-page report is worth looking at.
I'm scheduled for a zoom discussion on Wednesday with a 1daysooner coordinated group, they're looking to build fairly quickly as a resource.

It just goes to show you that no matter when we reopen things, it WILL spike. We can't leave the world shut down forever. It shows that we never should have shut it down in the first place. If we hadn't shut things down in the first place, this crap would already be over.

In America it's a political issue. If you're in one tribe you have to say the economy is more important and the disease is trivial, if you're in the other tribe you have to say the economy is more important but the government has made a mess of keeping the disease from spreading. Both tribes think the other is the enemy instead of collegiate, both tribes are money-obsessed and both sides think beating the other is the most important outcome.magentaflame wrote: ↑Wed Jun 17, 2020 9:59 pm Im sorry i don't understand you guys . Re: Covid-19 is spiking . . . .
This is worth a read, I think:
What Colorado is getting right about reopening
While surrounding states see spike in virus, Colorado’s methodical approach is working.
Colorado was the first Democratic-run state to reopen from a coronavirus lockdown, and so far it has avoided the fresh spikes in infection rippling across the West. Its measured approach could be a lesson for the country on how to reopen effectively.
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis stood out because he embarked on a slow and methodical economic recovery in late April — even before the White House’s stay-at-home guidelines expired. Polis limited when restaurants and other businesses could reopen, at first only allowing curbside pickups at stores, imposing strict social distancing on salons and other personal services and prohibiting gatherings over 10 people.

I say that the economy is more important than preventing a disease that is no worse than the flu. If you aren't willing to shut things down due to the flu every year, It is hypocritical to say that we should shut it down for COVID19. This is far worst than having the Flu, if you actually are affected by the disease. Tell me how many people who contract the Flu end up on respirators for weeks or even months. How many people who contract the Flu lose 40% of their body mass while sick?
And there is no "preventing the disease." It is here. The task is to manage the spread of the thing.

You see, that’s where you are wrong, the flu is a disease that’s been around for thousands of years and the population has built up a degree of immunity, covid is new, much like the Black Death in the fourteenth century.

Reported deaths in the US attributed to the COVID 19 virus are a quarter of the global count.
The US population is less than 5% of the global count.
Idiots in the US who believe the virus to be "just like the Flu" bear a large part of the responsibility for that.

Well that didn't last very long .....oh well.

#BREAKING: The Victorian Premier has announced that the state will be tightening COVID-19 restrictions from Monday, amid growing concern about a looming second wave of the virus.
From 11.59pm on Sunday, private households will only be able to have up to five visitors, down from gatherings of up to 20 people as currently allowed.
There have been 25 new cases of the virus detected.
It’s the fourth day in a row with a double digit rise in cases.

Good lord, what we English would do for that sort of freedom. We can have one visitor - not one at a time, just one selected visitor who's allowed to come and go - and if the government had thought they could insist the visitor wasn't allowed to undress during their visit they'd have made that a rule too.magentaflame wrote: ↑Sat Jun 20, 2020 2:04 am Well that didn't last very long .....oh well.![]()

We had the one visitor thing . The problem seems to be exactly that. Apparently they've been able to figure out that the new cases have come from family gatherings and people letting their guard down. Oh and the work from home thing has been extended to the 31st July. I'm not worried because we were warned this could happen. That's why they keep telling us to expect this crap for the rest of the year. They are hoping that it wont last that long but expect the unexpected . Meanwhile the Pollies are sooking over opening the borders. well that's not going to happenspot wrote: ↑Sat Jun 20, 2020 2:47 amGood lord, what we English would do for that sort of freedom. I think live means standing with other people in front of a stage.
The real question is whether restrictions will still be necessary this time next year. It seems more likely than not.

In today's lingo, "live" means "real time" broadcast, as opposed to recorded and broadcast later.

America has a military-led fast track vaccine program, I forget the name. I'd certainly not be first in line when those trucks come round.
I think I'd also demand that whatever's being offered to me is equally available worldwide before I'd feel it ethical to get protected. There are a lot more people with worse health-care provision than I have, who consequently need a working vaccine more than I do.

I would doubt that even one church in a hundred opened their buildings for services in America in defiance of an official lockdown. Some few did, and those were top of the international media slots in consequence. What makes you think it was commonplace?

The final numbers for the FLU in the US are in. There were 39 to 56 million cases of Flu, and 24 to 64 thousand deaths attributed to the FLU.
Taking the highest estimates, the death rate for the FLU was at the highest, 0.15 % (lowest possible confirmed cases/highest possible fatality count)
The mortality rate, so far for COVID-19 in the US is 5.1% (Confirmed cases/fatality)
So, no, COVID-19 is not "just like the FLU"

Wrong again. The key words are "Confirmed Cases". Factoring in the "Unconfirmed Cases" estimates that the University in NY and the University in California conducted, the ACTUAL death rate of COVID19 is 25-85x LESS deadly than the Confirmed Cases estimates, making it probably LOWER than the flu. The reason is that 25-85x as many people had it that didn't report it and or didn't know they had it, but tested positive for the antibodies.LarsMac wrote: ↑Mon Jun 22, 2020 6:16 pmJust thought it worth mentioning:xfrodobagginsx wrote: ↑Thu Jun 18, 2020 7:48 amI say that the economy is more important than preventing a disease that is no worse than the flu. They range from 3% down to just over 1% and the recent ones come of the back of antibody tests so factor in asymptomatic and unreported cases.
