The world's second-largest gem quality diamond has been discovered in Botswana, the Lucara Diamond firm says.
The 1,111-carat stone was recovered from its Karowe mine, about 500km (300 miles) north of the capital, Gaborone
This news got me wondering, apart from it being used as an abrasive and as a pretty decoration, what really is the value of this "Second largest diamond"?
Value v worth ?

It will depend on how well it cuts. But will very like end up in a private collection somewhere, after selling for a remarkable amount of money, unless the has faults that prevent a good cutting.
Even if it ends up being divided into a lot of smaller gems, those will sell at a premium because they came from this rock. A lot of people have too much money these days.

It's a bit like those people who buy bottles of wine as an investment, without even dreaming of ever opening it & drinking it. For all they know it may have turned to vinegar, but as long as it remains unopened it appreciates in value. The same goes for the greet works of art that are kept dark, air conditioned vaults, where nobody can ever get to see them.
A diamond that is too big to do anything with on its own, apart from cut it to make smaller ones has no real value at all. After all, anything is only 'worth' as much as anyone is prepared to pay for it.

Absolutely true, FourPart. It's criminal, IMO.

@Lars your telling me of it's sale price, as opposed to the worth. Thats what I am stumbling toward.
The diamond was discovered in Botswana, a not too badly off country considering it being 70% desert.
It has been forming under the ground forever, then it is just found and its finder company get rich, the people further up the chain get richer.
You can't eat it, but already there is a minor industry around the finding of this one piece of carbon, men will spend time studying it,committees will decide how the thing will be divided.
And it will just be kept in a vault most of the time under guard.
The Bushmen would rather have a bow and arrow or whatever and a bore hole for a sip of water at a fraction of the selling price.
Funny old world.

It is a common affliction. States selling lottery tickets depend on it. Casinos and their rigged games profit handsomely on it.
There's a sucker born every minute
Maybe not diamonds, but I'll bet just about everybody collects something that others don't understand.

What happened to Kamala Harris' campaign?
She had the black vote all locked up.

i don't think it's going to be divided digging these kind of at this size is pretty much rare and that's why as a big diamond it's more valuable then dividing it to smaller pieces and losing it's unique value.

If it contains flaws that prevent a good cut, then they will have to deal with that by cutting it into smaller workable pieces.
Of course, this day and age keeping it its raw form and showing it off is not entirely unimaginable.
