Warren Mitchell, RIP

Post by spot »

"The show highlighted the pressures felt by the white working class at a time of great social change in Britain" - Warren Mitchell obituary: Alf Garnett and much more - BBC News

One could, I suppose, put it that way.

I was never allowed to watch, my mother wouldn't let him in the house or hear his name spoken. Which is a testament to his performance, I reckon.

His stage performances I regret missing.

There's no sense in calling him a comedian but his monster role, Alf Garnett, was exactly that. Frankensteinian. He was an astonishing actor.

I always likened Warren Mitchell / Alf Garnett to "Love Thy Neighbour". The humour was much more subtle than that seen at face value. Many people viewed it as being very Politically Incorrect & Racist, where in actually fact, the humour was actually targeted at deriding the Racist aspect of his nature.
