Calais migrant scenes unacceptable, David Cameron says

Post by spot »

And how very right you are, Prime Minister. Spot on. I couldn't have put it better myself.

I have a solution.

You know those ferries that run back and forth on the Calais/Dover route?

Go and borrow one for a day. Rent it out. Ask the ferry company to lend one to the country.

Then send it to Calais and empty the place of every expatriate hoping to get to the United Kingdom. Invite them onto the ferry, give them a cup of tea and a meal and a change of clothes.

You're with me so far? Right.

Bring the ferry back to Dover, unload the ferry and give everyone on it a Tier 1 general work visa and a one-way ticket to London.

Job done. Problem solved. The economy will benefit, London will benefit, Calais will benefit and you won't be on the front page of the newspaper bleating about "Calais migrant scenes unacceptable" next week.

Why that man has a job in the first place baffles me, much less one with responsibility.

The problem there is the same as the problem of the roads - the more you make provision for the extra traffic the more extra traffic it generates.

I don't think Calais fills up quite as quickly as you both seem to think but, in principle, yes, another boat. These expatriates we're discussing are a valuable asset to any community so long as they have work permits.

Why not build a bridge ?

Where do all the thousands of Mediterranean boat people go ?

Nobody ever made a profitable business plan using a bridge, the ferries and tunnel are perfectly adequate. What is utterly screwing up Calais at the moment is the British passport check queue. It's not a problem of French origin, it's an entirely British-manufactured problem. Remove the British entry restriction and Calais will be as undisturbed as Margate or Clacton.

The Mediterranean boat people go all over the shop. They only exist in such numbers because the British government colluded to overthrow the legitimate government of Libya.

There is a bridge. The difference is that it goes underwater.

That one never had a profitable business plan either.

Some of this is for humour's sake surely ?

Those images of people jumping into lorries were not carrying passports or close to passport control.

As much as I sympathise with the French for the situation they are in, why we cannot work together as members of the EU to address this issue seems to negate some of the reasoning behind being members in the first place.

Not ALL those wanting to enter the UK are from Libya.

This mass movement of people is a world problem, taking more than our fair share of the blame far too British of you.

The company which built it went bankrupt and the debts were all written off, that's why the new Eurotunnel can make a profit instead of paying off massive interest bills. I assume the train companies make a profit while using the line, yes.

Bernard Levin wrote about it, I remember.

It often happens. Blueyonder's shareholders lost their shirts and Virgin made the profits, that would be a good example.

Why should the French be bothered about Passport Control. They're not trying to get into France from the UK. They're trying to get into the UK from France. Out of their back yard into ours.

The French have a passport control manned by French staff in Dover, the British have a passport control manned by British staff in Calais. Does that help? It means that someone without an appropriate passport and visa can't cross a national boundary.
