All credit to the chap, David Duckenfield has finally cleared the air with his startling statements at the inquest this week.
Given that he was tried fifteen years ago for manslaughter in a private prosecution at which he refused to take the stand, it's a major acknowledgement. The jury couldn't agree a verdict, though they found a fellow officer not guilty.
I don't see that another trial would help anyone.

First reaction I suspect he is greatly relieved to have this off his chest, second reaction I wonder if he is taking all the blame to bring this to a conclusion for his colleagues and the relatives.

If you consider how many other officers with first-hand knowledge of the day must have sustained the lie all this while, I don't see how it can "bring this to a conclusion for his colleagues". I'd say it firmly establishes a specific instance of institutional lying within an English police force.
As for the officer himself, I'd quite like to think there will be prayers said on his behalf at Liverpool Cathedral this week.

Doubt it was entirely his decision that day, there were others on the team giving advice and feedback from their position on the ground.
All of them contributed to any decisions made, and since then they have all carried part of the guilt, closing ranks to protect each other, all very human, even in policemen.
I meant he alone is shouldering the blame for the good of all concerned, police and victims.

Perhaps he has just come to believe it.

President Truman had a sign on his desk which red "The buck stops here". I don't think this buck could legitimately be passed any higher than the senior officer in attendance. Whether he gave the explicit order or not - and he claims he did - he's still the right person to carry the responsibility and always has been.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing with you. I just wonder if he was perhaps in genuine denial for all these years and finally worked through it.

“The jury was told the former chief superintendent had at least three minutes to 'consider the consequences' of opening an exit gate ¦ “
At least three minutes? I don't care how much training you've had, three minutes isn't all that much ¦.. and inadequate (in my mind) for a thorough discussion before making any decision that weighs so heavily.
