I slightly edited the original list i posted when I remembered "The Man Who Would Be King". A Rudyard Kipling story made into a film starring Michael Caine and Sean Connery. It is about 2 british soldiers who decide to attempt to independently become kings of the isolated tribal region of KÄfiristÄn using their military prowess. I looked it up and it was actually made in 1975 but I will leave it up because it's a good movie.

Gimme Shelter. Hard Day's Night. Don't Look Back. Joe.
Worst--Getting Straight, or any other pretending to understand what was Really Going On, unlike Easy Rider, which understood completely.
Just off the top of my head, don't want to think too hard!

One of my all time fav subjects .
I am desperately not knocking all of these essentially American films for the sake of argument -- with a few British ones thrown in .
I have seen all of them and there are a few great ones in the several lists . Not many , but more than two .
If you really love film , look at Italian neo - realism and then the amazing Italian and French New Waves .
Incomparably superior and by a huge distance .Nothing to do with personal taste or judgement . Just like a comparison report between a lovely Mini and a sublime Rolls Royce .
The Polish cinema was also amazing at the same time , albeit on a smaller scale .
I am assured that Japanese cinema produced all time masterpieces and that Indian and Iranian cinema has much to commend . Unfortunately my knowledge in these last three named areas is poor .
In simple terms Hollywood and even US independents followed the money bits from within the New Wave cinema .
The French and Italian cinema movement was and remains so much better in every respect .
I cannot overstate my implicit recommendation . Chalk and Cheese gives a strong hint .
