Ellen Muriel Deason who was better known as Kitty Wells was born August 30, 1919 and died July 16, 2012.

She topped the country charts, the first female singer to manage this, in the U.S. in 1952 with a hit recording: “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels.”

The song is a rebuke to the men of the time who blamed their wayward behavior on wayward women. At the time the lyrics were pretty controversial and the record was banned by many radio stations and also temporarily banned from the Grand Ole Opry.

One line in particular irked NBC.: “It brings back memories of when I was a trustful wife.” Wells relented and made a slight alteration changing “trustful” to “trusting” and the network lifted the ban on the song.







Which isn’t surprising considering these blatantly sexists adverts of the time!
