It may be a white Christmas for you all. Which would be good, considering London has had only 5 white Christmases in a century.

The weather is incredibly fierce here today. Driving to work early this morning with gales and loads of surface water wasn't very nice. Then I thought it was easing but the wind has got up again this evening.

Wind is horrendous. It's blowing rain through my letter box and finding its way somehow into our loft room. Our old house is drafty at the best of times

My flat overlooks the village square...goodness knows how the 30ft Christmas tree has stayed upright in the gales.

Still windy and raining here, meant to cleared from this area by 4am. Glad I am no longer at the top of the hill, would have been cold up there tonight. Bit of a treat to be sat in front of a fire and actually feel the warmth.

Woke up to the felt on my flat roof garage/workshop torn off and the electric box fizzing.
All my tools are soaking wet, not too happy today.

Hasn't been too bad so far. A small amount of flooding in the SE - not nice if you are one of those flooded, but not a national catastrophe. Not yet, anyway...Nothing like what you Aussies suffered last year! And at least you are beating the bejasus out of our poor cricketers! That has to make Aussie feel better! :wah: Blimey, hasn't old Mitchell found his radar now he's got a proper Aussie fast bowling moustache!
Next blast (of wind, not Mitch!) due in tonight and now more forecast following this one.
Climate change is happening folks. And will get worse for the next 20 years at least - unless we have a technological breakthrough.

Been blowing here since around five this evening, still blowing now by the sounds of it although it has to be said now I'm in town I'm pretty much sheltered from the howling gales. I do miss being able to watch the rough seas from the kitchen window though.

Hi Betty. :driving:
So you have got off your hill! Oh good - you can get out and about a bit more. Maybe you can't see the rough from your window (I remember that!~ Watching the Bar break outside Salcombe from home and Tennyson wrote that poem Crossing the Bar which was always in my mind when I was old enough: May there be no moaning of the sea/ When I cross the Bar {iirc}) but at least you can get down onto the rocks and watch the spindrift. I don't know why, but heavy weather always lifts my spirits. As long as it doesn't lift my roof!

I get your heavy weather comment, nothing is more exhilarating than walking near the sea in stormy weather. I shall have to look up that poem.
Got off the hill back in September, my brother is five minutes up the road and my Mum is five minutes down the road and at some point my sister may well be pretty close too, so all is good. Much better house too, nice kitchen and two bathrooms and all three children have their own rooms finally - very spoilt :wah:

Crossing the Bar
SUNSET and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness or farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.
I see I misquoted:-3. But got the gist
Ooof! It's here now bigtime. Not bad enough to hurt though - I am just exhilarated.! Lol

We've had rain running down the chimney breast in the loft room. Must have been the wind driving it in through the roof or round the flashing.
Had a large box of photographs soaked, so we had to lay thousands of them out to dry. Some important ones got stained but we haven't lost any completely.
Have you any idea how long that takes ? For every photo you lay out to dry, you study it, show it to someone and discuss every part about it.
Doesn't seem to be any let up with that wind yet. I've got two fence panels to refix but it can't be done with it still blowing. I might not see them again
Really good to see you back Clod

It's eased for now here, sunshine between heavy showers but I've chanced putting the washing out.
There are flights to the Scillies from Lands End but none from Newquay at the moment due to cross winds looks like they are hoping to fly this afternoon.

Hiya Snowie!
Sounds as though you had a lucky escape. No damage here. So far. Touch wood. Though a friend has lost his fence (as have all his neighbours). No sun either, just hail showers and bursts of rain and the cloudbase ripping past.
Key question I suppose is how long to the next one? If we get a bit of time for the rivers to drain we'll be fine, but a really heavy downpour now will mean trouble given the waterlogged state of things.

Had no idea it's called a funeral song! It's a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson, which is all I know it as. It's a bit special to me because he wrote it about Salcombe and the underwater sandbar which runs across the estuary mouth. It's permanently underwater, but shallow enough that at very low tides it is possible to walk on parts of it up to your chest in water, but right out in the middle of the sea! In any sort of rough weather but especially falling tides with a bit of south in the wind the waves break on it as if on a beach - but there is no beach there. So you get this line of dramatic surf, white against the grey, which divides the harbour from the gale. In other words it's a dividing line between the known and safe and the wild unknown out there. That's the image Tennyson uses.
Just a great little poem as far as I am concerned, which brings a beautiful and dramatic place before my mind's eye every time I think of it. I can understand why it might appear a lot at sailors' funerals.

When a sailor or a Wharfie/dock worker, merchant seaman dies it's read out at his funeral. When a sailor dies it's considered 'he's crossed the bar' for good. I'ts quite a lovely way to express a farewell. I didn't know the history of the poem though.
Speaking of seaman, after seeing the pics of the damage you may need some inland. lol

Not quite a wild and windy as the last ones, and no extra flooding that I've seen reported which is good. But there are another two low pressure systems lining up. It's been so regular you can almost set your watch by it. At least the gaps between the storms have been just enough for the rivers to drain. So far...
But I'm leaving my trip to the sales until tomorrow now...one of the things I want to get is new waterproofs...:wah:
