Watching the news today and the revelation that the killer ran toward an armed police officer hoping to be killed, only to be wounded, taken to hospital and given the best of care........made me think.

What an ironic form of sweet justice, to save the life of somebody intent on maryterdom, and then to jail them until the passage of time gives them the wisdom to see the error of their ways, when they regret the crime and plead for mercy, keep them detained until they die.

Much more cruel than a swift death sentence.

You didn't supply a link to this story, but as presented really doesn't matter.

I bold the word maryterdom because I did not know if that had anything to do with what I perceive your point is.

First of all I am totally in favor of capital punishment for anybody who commits the crime of murder. Without going into great detail, I am talking of the deliberate unlawful taking the life of another human.

Now, in the situation you present the person was not convicted of a murder.

OK, sitting here, I'm wondering if maybe you're scenario would be better suited to some case where the murderer sat many years before receiving justice.

It is chronic in the US, endless delays in execution. That is an example of justice delayed is justice denied.

Considering the hundreds of murderers sitting behind bars awaiting execution, not many are stepping up to the needle.

For Tude's information the LINK

The trial is happening at the moment of two Muslim converts that killed a British soldier on a London street then waited for the police to arrive.

During the wait one was videod giving his reasons for committing the murder, it is him on the first video in the link that runs toward the police car, during the trial he said he had wanted to be shot dead.

My slant on it is that it is a far harsher punishment that the Police spared his life gave him first aid before getting him to hospital and saving his sorry life, so that he might bitterly regret the actions that put him on trial.

I am almost sorry I feel so happy his life has been spared so that he can spend years and years coming to terms with his barbarous crime.

I will go so far as to say I hope he dies in prison of old age.

I think execution would give him exactly what he sought, martyrdom, so the punishment to fit the crime is condemned to a long life.

A matter of opinion/perspective?

The State of California houses over 400 inmates awaiting execution. It costs way more to execute them than just keep them for 'life'.

Once and execution is performed, I maintain justice is worth the price.

Are you telling me that to execute swiftly rather than the long drawn out system America uses, is more expensive than keeping someone alive for twenty plus years ?

I maintain justice cannot be served by extinquishing an existance..........under any circumstances.

My argument here is that NOT executing somebody that wants to be martyred is far more cruel than killing them.

Yes

Death Penalty Center

That appears a site against capital punishment and argue the costs.

So the argument goes from justice to cost.

Considering the inmates up for capital punishment are the most horrific, it is incredible to me not every effort isn't exercised to bring justice.

I think it is the American appeal procedure and the high cost of legal representation funded by the state (state meaning tax payers) that makes the system more expensive, not the act of execution alone.

The whole system appears to an outsider to be for the benefit of the legal profession, rather than the convicted person or justice.

Pro-capital Punishment folks are always bringing up the cost of keeping capital criminals locked up, versus offing them.

If killing them is costlier, then that argument should be tossed out the window. And it comes down, simply, to whether killing them truly serves justice. It seems to me it only serves vengeance.

But then even vengeance is not truly served when we kill the wrong people.

You are correct, it is the appeals which prolongs justice.

Not clear on this, but as any murderer comes close to execution, there are plenty of anti-capital punishment folk more than willing to throw big bucks to deny justice.

That's not strictly true In the case of these two. In the rant Michael Adebolajo made to the camera phone after killing Lee Rigby, he talked of British soldiers commiting rape and murder In his country and Afghan saying It was an eye for an eye. I can't find anything that reports he talked of martyrdom.

He said he was "almost certain" he would be shot and killed by the firearms officers who arrived at the scene of the attack in Woolwich.

Last week, CCTV footage of him running towards the police car with a meat cleaver raised was shown to the court.

He complained on Monday that the officers had not shot him in the head but said he had no grievance with them, because they were "just doing their duty".

He said he should be ransomed back to other jihadi fighters, set free or killed if he was found guilty.

Yes but was he doing that for

Martyrdom is a reasonable assumption given he is an Islamic fundamentalist, even if it hasn't been implicitly stated. It's a common belief amongst those with extremist leanings. In fact it was reported in the papers that he wished to become a martyr.

The 28-year-old claimed he was prepared to be shot dead by armed police to become a martyr and enter paradise.

Michael Adebolajo: 'I killed Lee Rigby because I am a soldier… of Allah' | Metro News

Therefore I agree with Bruv. Its rather Ironic that the justice served to him will not include a trip to paradise, whether that includes a visit to your maiden aunt or not

I am not happy that perfect justice is impossible to obtain, just realistic. I have no idea of how many posts here I commented on crime, which is an interest of mine.

I am PO'd every time some perp gets away. Even worse is having to read when some innocent spends time behind bars. Almost as bad is when one has to go bankrupt defending against a false charge.

These are things nobody can be certain to defend against.

It doesn't help when in this country the head of the The United States Department of Justice, Eric Holder is more about politics than justice.

A British Muslim has pleaded guilty to posting videos on YouTube glorifying the killing of Fusilier Lee Rigby.

Royal Barnes, 23, of Hackney, east London, recorded and uploaded three videos shortly after the murder in Woolwich, south-east London, last May.

In one of the videos, he hailed the murder as a "brilliant day" and in another he mocked the outpouring of public grief, the Old Bailey heard.

Is this a crime ?

Well obviously it is.....................but should it be?

I am amused by this young man's name.......Royal ? Is that right ?

If I was so happy to celebrate this murder, I would at least change my name first.

If nothing else it's incitement to violence - if this violence makes today a "brilliant day" then we need more violence of this type to make other days "brilliant".
