Out of curiosity what would your opinion be if the walmart employees got together and went on strike to demand a greater share of the companies profits in the form of higher wages?

100,000,000 Americans a week supporting the Chinese economy by shopping at the Worlds third largest corporation.

If joining unions is what they want, I have no dog in that fight.
I thought interesting demand a greater share of the companies profits in the form of higher wages
hmm, maybe those who invested in the company might have a different point if view.
Lets see, who took the risk.

No. It's a publicly traded company. The Walton family deliberately avoided holding a majority of the stock to stay out of the management of the company.
I am pretty sure Ol' Sam and Helen turn over in their graves, regularly, if they see what the company has become. They always believed in taking care of the employees.

It doesn't really matter, being that at least four Walton family members are amongst the ten richest Americans, riches counted in billions, whilst their employees are having collections for fellow employees.

The question might perhaps be why should the opinion of those who invested in the company be the only oner that matters? Surely those who choose to work for them are also investing in the company with their time and labour, should they not then be able to negotiate how much that is worth and if doing so collectively makes that a fairer process why should they not do do - without them there is no walmart and no profit. Monopolies are not good for capitalism and if the lack of alternative employment forces down wages that isn't actually good for the economy. Walmart is one of the companies that chose not to invest in the US economy instead buying abroad eventually there will be no one left top buy what they are importing.

@gmc.... Strangley enough a few years ago Asda a member of the Walmart family......was supposedly at the top of the best companies to work for in the UK.
The old idea of investing in your own workers is a good idea in times when there is plenty of work, I suppose it works the other way when workers are just happy to have any job, the employer can always get more staff eager to impress, if they don't come up to scratch there is always the queue at the job centre

It's a good idea at all times a discontented workforce under performs, goes slow, doesn't take enough care with paperwork etc etc and can put a company out of business. A pissed off or badly trained worker in the meat department not cycling stock or not putting stuff away in fridges on time leads to environmental health issues and fines. I could go on and on. For my sins I was manager with asda some years ago now. All the stores i worked in that has problems with stock losses or poor profitability it was never theft it always turned out to be staff not doing their jobs properly or being badly trained and not actually understanding what they were doing especially back door staff responsible for checking stuff in or or admin processing invoices. If staff are just working because they need the money they don't care - yes they all work because they need the money but of you enjoy going to work it makes all the difference. Crappy wages and constant bullying to perform is a recipe for long term failure. People aren't idiots treating them well is basic common sense as well as common decency. I think things go to the dogs when you talk about human resources -, a resource is something you use up and throw away when you are finished using it Treat them with contempt and that is what you get back. Lesson from history the have nots turn in to the f--- you. Who knows one day the shareholders might find themselves compelled to share their profits with those who actually make it for them.
It's always cheaper to keep staff than it is to keep recruiting - it's basic good management. Incidentally the asda and tesco here are just as bad except we seem less likely to put up with crap. People remember how they were treated and are quite capable of boycotting companies they disapprove of - just ask starbucks

Sounds like fun. I love crossing picket lines. I had a great time when in California when grocery store union workers were locked out. At first they were all energetic, marching back and forth, waving signs. After three months, no pay, they were a sorry sight. Not so much fun on the picket line anymore.
If people walk off their job I would expect them to be fired.
I find it amazing, people with no skill or education expecting more money just because.
Want more money, acquire a skill, a trade. Something of value to offer more than your presence. Consider just how pathetic these whiners are as self service replaces them.

What the hell do you mean "anymore"? A picket line is something of last resort it's never been fun.
So tell me something when construction workers go on strike because of company safety cut backs, you want to stand in front of them and tell them they have no skills?
You want to stand in front of a Nurse and tell him or her they are whiners when they are concerned about overwork, patient to staff ratios?
You want to tell a teacher you're happy to step into their shoes because they are whiners over pay rates?
REALLY? Wow!!! So you don't think people should stand up and speak out when their rates of pay are a little over poverty line rates? And you don't believe people should have the right to demand payment for their time. Your idiocy on this subject is is amazing.
So what do you sell ? Some people have nothing but themselves to sell and the worst thing in the world is a human being that believes they are only worth a pittance, whilst becoming rich on their misery .

You know something about the people who work for the local trash pickup company? I never personally met any of them and I see no reason to refer to them is an insulting manner.
I've tried to get a job with the county dump (separate from pick up). Work is work.

Not up to me to put a value on somebody else's labor. I know when I did janitorial and other jobs requiring no real skill never received nor expected much pay.

No real skill? You musn't have done a very good job. Cleaners here (janitor) receive anywhere between $20.00 and $28.00 and hour. And so they should. yet a child care workier that has to be qualified and trained receives only $18.00 and hour. Working in a hospital laundry at the moment I receive $23.00 an hour. Casual rates suck!!!!!!

Casual rates suck!!!!!!
Nothing wrong with the quality of my work. You Aussies must think awfully high of your janitors.

I once worked at a place which required union membership. Had to follow some of the most stupid rules.
Like the union contract repeated, labor does the labor, management manages. Pay is negotiated. I don't know that collective bargaining is more fair or not, but I would be pissed being forced out of my job because of union nonsense.
- without them there is no walmart and no profit. Monopolies are not good for capitalism and if the lack of alternative employment forces down wages that isn't actually good for the economy. Walmart is one of the companies that chose not to invest in the US economy instead buying abroad eventually there will be no one left top buy what they are importing.
Walmart employs people, that is good for the economy. People want inexpensive goods, that is why so much comes from China
So does that mean you believe people should touch their forelocks and be grateful for what the generous employer is willing to pay them?[/QUOTE]

Yes. But they are slowly bringing in the rates Americans are more accustomed to. Even tried to begin tipping as well ........The toffs will leave tips but most people are offended by it . I certainly am. Unions here didn't fight for all our working rights just to have them all stripped away by some greedy yank. But they will still try .

Lets hope the unions can get a living wage before you do..............wouldn't want to change your dyed in the wool attitude to *cough* the evils of socialism.
Funny enough while the Waltons are scouring socialist China for manufacturing bargains, and incidently raising unemployment in their own backyard, enabling them to pay their workers less.......because of the market forces involved................
One wonders how people such as the Tude arrive at the way they think................living in a bubble of their own creation.......and with the help of their capitalist puppet masters pulling all the strings.

I earn a living wage. I have to work hard for it and it's not steady, but we don't need much. I was just saying how easy it would be to work for the local grocery store or Walmart.

Uh, somehow, I suspect Walmart is not the cause of unemployment.

I don't think they managed it all on their own........but if there are a few like them and a few like you.......it wouldn't take too much imagination to see how it happened.

You can laugh........I hear Nero fiddled while Rome burnt.
That comment made me think of Marie-Antoinette, sort of reminds me of you, her reality was when told the poor people had no bread..... her advice "Let them eat cake"

Not on it's own, but if they had been buying all that inventory from American manufacturers and farmers who knows how big a difference it would have made. Sometimes people get hung up on the price of something and forget about value. WSome of the supermarkets herte are making a point of using home grown produce, meat, apples potatoes etc instead of importing cheaper stuff from abroad. Why import apples when our own producers are going out of business? It's partly in response to consumer demand and also response to some recent contamination cases in our food chain. it does seem to be helping I see it as paying a bit more and getting better value for my money.

But you are happy enough to except that the bosses and the system know best.........even though it is clear they are shafting you big time.Walmart is the classic successful business, who from off the top of my head was formed in the sixties, has made 4 family members billionaires, but who's employees are struggling to survive...........and they source the goods from outside the USA.........crazy crazy crazy. Screwing everybody over except their shareholders , making the rich richer and the poor poorer......and killing the countries manufacturing.

Sorry, but all three of you are shootin' from the hip and not a one of you know what you're aimin' at.
That had to be said because this thread has become agonizing to read.
I'm sure I've offended all three of you. Sorry, but you shouldn't be pontificating on subjects you have no business expounding on. Not one of you have offered even the slightest valid reasoning or justification for anything you've posted. It's pitiful. .

Is this meant to add to the thread?
If it is.... some 'expounding' is required..........only then will my offence or lack of offence be known.
When you say 'justification' ......do you mean 'links'?
If it is really that agonising............don't read it.........but if you must add to the topic, stop being so bloody cryptic, because you are coming across as a right clever dick who believes himself far too clever to explain the bleeding obvious to us low life knobs.
