Florida Funded Impotence Drug For Sex Offenders
POSTED: 8:44 am EDT May 29, 2005
WASHINGTON -- Nearly 800 convicted sex offenders in 14 states got Medicaid-funded prescriptions for Viagra and other impotence drugs, according to a survey by The Associated Press.
The majority of the cases were in Florida, New York and Texas.
Medicaid, the health insurance program for the poor, is administered differently in every state. Thus, while some states allowed Medicaid payments for prescriptions for the drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, other states did not.

I heard about this last week and was dumbstruck myself. What really chapped my butt is that my tax dollars are paying for this outrage. You don't give sexual enhancement drugs to people who cannot control their own actions. Why the heck do they need with Viagra in prison????

Virginia: 52
Missouri: 26

LC, I posted about this in the "Viagra causes blindness" thread, it really
got to me, too, and I am flabbergasted.
One thing I forgot to mention in my earlier post was that there was a
guy on the news in SUPPORT of these scumbags getting Viagra. Why?!?
Something about how if they were able to have a good relationship with
their wives/girlfriends they wouldn't re-offend. You guys know what word
I want to use for THAT and it starts with B and ends with T!!! The
Green River Killer, Gary Ridgway, was said to have been "happily" married
for many years of his killing spree.

I went back and re-read the article - you are right - not prisoners. It still doesn't make any sense. Saltpeter is what they should be given.

Val....sorry i missed your previous post on this subject...and the chemicals mentioned here are ineffectual. as to them having "healthy" relationships, that is pure bollocks. a pedophile is a pedophile forever, whether married or not. generally they marry women with kids so they have built-in victims.

Some old news on the subject:
In 1998, health officials under the Clinton administration ordered Medicaid to provide impotency drugs for medical necessities such as if a man is recovering from prostate surgery or suffering from diabetes. That directive did not prohibit such drugs from being dispensed to registered sex offenders.
News summaries for July 20, 1998
States revolt at covering Viagra under Medicaid
The National Governors Assn. has strongly condemned the federal government's decision that the impotence drug Viagra must be covered by state Medicaid programs. New York and Wisconsin have declared they would defy the federal mandate while twenty-two other states were not covering Viagra at the time of the announcement. The nation's governors say the new mandate could cost Medicaid $100 million a year. Other concerns include: A preemption of state authority in determining what is appropriate for their unique population, the drug's safety, and improper prescribing. Medicaid officials warn that a state that refuses to cover a drug could be removed from the Medicaid drug rebate program and lose millions in discounts.
.......................................................................................................
Some states had relied on a 1998 letter from the Clinton administration as a basis for providing coverage, said Matt Salo, a staff member of the National Governors Association. But that letter also said restrictions could be put in place to curb abuse. For example, the letter said states should limit the number of refills or the quantity of pills per prescription.
That letter, sent to then-Govs. Mike Leavitt of Utah and Lawton Chiles of Florida, said Medicaid must cover all FDA-approved drugs with certain exceptions. Those exceptions included drugs used for weight control, for cosmetic purposes or to promote fertility.
"The law is pretty clear. The letter in 1998 said Medicaid had to cover Viagra," said Salo, the director of the association's health and human services committee. "I don't think there is any dispute about that."
Some states did decline to provide coverage for impotence drugs to any male. South Dakota considers Viagra and similar drugs to be fertility drugs.
"Our rules are specific in that we do not cover agents to promote fertility or to treat impotence," said Larry Iverson, director of South Dakota's Office of Medical Services.
Wisconsin officials simply ignored the directive.
The state's health and human services chief "thought the directive was ill-advised and chose to disregard it," said a department spokeswoman, Stephanie Marquis.

"Meagans Law" here in California requires sex offenders to be registered and their address and profile is available on the web. I did a search fro my zip code area and was astounded to see 48 registered sex offfenders within a five mile radius. I had no idea that there were so many of these creeps. There were a few that for some reason addresses were not listed.

I bet it might have something to do with the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals........... Not sure why?
Oh here I found it!
Gov. Says No to Viagra for Sex Offenders
Schwarzenegger said he issued the emergency order "to protect all Californians" until permanent regulations can be written to "target the sex offenders who pose a threat to innocent citizens with these drugs."
About 63,000 registered sex offenders live in California. The state does not know how many †if any †are getting impotency drugs through state health programs because California is prohibited from using the Megan's Law registry for such purposes.

What I find even more disturbing about this, (other than the fact that tax dollars will be spent to give sicko's erections) is that the crimes we are talking about have NOTHING to do with sex. Rapists and pedophiles do not commit their crimes to "have sex." It is all about power, and WHY for the love of god do we want to give them MORE power???? This is absolutely beyond my comprehension. :-5 :-5
