What is the world coming too?

Post by Mickiel »

There is SO much going on, and its going on everywhere around this globe. Just far too much stuff to even start a list. When you look at the world with a reasonable mind, its no wonder people believe in a God. Good grief, just look at the rampage and the turmoil, it has a way of drowning out the good that's out there.

What is the world coming to? What's it going to be like 100 years from now? Even 50 years from now?

Socrates (469–399 B.C.)

QUOTATION: The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.

I do nothing but go about persuading you all, old and young alike, not to take thought for your persons or your properties, but and chiefly to care about the greatest improvement of the soul. I tell you that virtue is not given by money, but that from virtue comes money and every other good of man, public as well as private. This is my teaching, and if this is the doctrine which corrupts the youth, I am a mischievous person.Socrates, quoted by Plato, 'The Death of Socrates'

Greek philosopher in Athens (469 BC - 399 BC)

If he said that so long ago, then he was a great philosopher. Goodness, the man was right then, and still is right now. Interesting.

Well I think some of it is. There has to be a reason, in my view, for this world, the only other possible thing is no reason. So there it is, either we have a reason behind this world, or there is no reason to it.

People been asking these questions since day one ... every generation asks them. If there was a god by now he would surely have answered.

I guess in 50 years the earths population will (?) be 9 billion. It's going to be tough to support that many people. I suspect there will be ongoing warfare for the next century and in there sometime a major war that could possibly set us back decades, population wise we may not go beyond 10 to 11 billion per my wife who does this stuff. There are some projections saying that if a major war or disaster were to happen we could possibly drop as low as 3.9 billion due to our inter-dependency of food and other necessities. It's a huge subject but I do not think the generation being born now will have near the life expectancy or opportunity we have had.

We're pretty ill prepared for our future, we only really have 2 hopes. Space technology or a very significant advance in science here.

Well I agree with all this, except there being only two real hopes; I view God as real, so I would say 3 hopes. Thats better than just two.

I disagree; I have made a study of God for over 40 years now; one of his definite ways is to remain silent toward humanity; I don't know why, but he just does not talk to humans. So him being silent is not evidence of him not being there; not in my view.

The world is growing increasingly inward and selfish, science is growing increasingly outward, and matter seems to be slowly devolving; all interesting dynamics, and spirituality seems to be growing wild in some places, dying slowly in others; what is the world coming to?

Fortunately we now live in a world where diverse & different, sometimes even bizarre views, whilst not finding favour with the masses are nonetheless acceptable in terms of the right of all earthlings to express themselves.

This right is yours and you may use it freely. As an atheist I reject any notion of a "supreme being" but I grant you the right to differ.

Interesting that my right exist without your grant, but still I wish that was a world view, but I don;t think it is.

God has been silent a long time, Isaiah 42:14, and 1:15. But I certainly agree that we have not been listening anyway.

The world is becoming increasingly secular, that ought to be interesting to see the result of that. Secular thinking believes it can do better than religious thinking; ( I think neither thinking has done any lasting good for the world that can preserve the world), or can thinking even make a difference in this world?

Any kind of thinking.

"God" has been silent since the catholic church invented him/she/it.

There is no such thing as god ...never has been ...

Any kind of thinking.Thinking has definitely made a difference to this point. The question, in my view, is whether or not the effects of our thinking has mostly been helpful or hurtful. The measure, I think, might be in the number of humans capable of living with the injustices our thinking has visited and continues to visit upon all life.

From your perspective, I imagine the question might be why God gave us this brain if we're this incapable of operating it, or with it?

Well we all can think, thats for sure, some better than others. I don't see how any thinking person can look at this world and wonder just how far we really have come, and where we are going, without some doubt or question. Seems like a tape recording to me, that has played before in some kind of way.

"We all" as in "you and I" perhaps, but there are people who are not capable of cognitive thinking - their brains may be smaller than yours and mine, or their cognitive development may have arrested at some point, and those people are no more capable of reasonable thought than say, a dog.

What is the world coming too? Its hard to tell, but its definitely a mixture of good and bad. Strange, that is exactly what the Tree in the garden of Eden was; a tree with a mixture of good and bad fruit;

The bible is deep man.

You did not ask me a question of myself, you asked " Why do " They" keep digging it up?" Since you referred to " They", I referred to " We"; Now, this is simple enough to me, but if you are not after simplicity, but rather just fault finding, searching for an arguement or just looking to fight, then I understand your complaint about grammar. Because when someone is just looking to stir up mess, nothing the other person does can be right. And this is part of what the world is coming too, people just picking apart what others are saying, for no reason.

You seem to have a need to advise me; right now I am only ignoring meaningless debate and useless insults; other than that, I won't ignore others. I already know what it is you want, your just not going to get it from me. I mean you can try, but I am not the one to be intimidated by things I have seen much too often.

I think you want an argument, you want to vent against what I am screaming; I think you want to pick and prick at what " You think" I am saying. I think I warded that off, and you see that, now mayhaps we can continue on a better basics; with a debate or discussion.

In my view, meaningless debate is debate that insults, calls people names, degrades and destroys communication.

Well............... no I don't, I don't believe your argument has a leg to stand on, whatever it is, so wouldn't enter into such an argument, as they are generally a waste of time and effort.

My comment whatever it was, was probably a one off joke, a throw away line............that possibly went over your head, because your head is somewhere else.

I 'll tell you what communication is coming to; just look at it here on this website; people think sarcasm is communication;

They think insulting peoples personage is acceptable communication

They think weird jokes is the way to communicate

They think cutting the person up is a good way to make a point

They think being harsh is the way of the future

And they do this everyday and think absolutely nothing of it.
