It seems America will be allowed to set up 9 bases in Afghanistan, with I hear up to 30000 personnel on them.

We'll never leave in the near future.

We don't leave. We never leave. We still have bases in Japan, Germany, Korea. We're the quintessential thugs, offering protection ... or else.

It's unending corporate/government sponsored warfare, we've been doing this since the end of WWII in one form or another, and to stretch it a bit even back hundreds of years. Such is humanity, sad that America has taken such a turn though.

The US claimed, right up to leaving Iraq, that it was going to keep a significant number of adequately staffed vast bases in the country - and the bases were built. The Iraqis refused legal immunity to non-diplomatic US service personnel and poof, the entire concept disintegrated. The bases, other than the embassy, are (as far as I'm aware, please correct me if I'm wrong) devoid of "liberators".

Maybe the Afghans will have sufficient nerve too. One can but hope, whether one's American or Afghan. Or even just an onlooker.

There are significant numbers of "security personnel" and "security firms" still operating in Iraq in various capacities. The US army has largely left but not the corporate armies who the US taxpayer foots the bill for. There is said to be about 7000 although I cannot confirm this.

Afghanistan borders with china. Not that I am suggesting any connection but there's no oil so why stay at all? Looks like Pakistan is going to move from a democracy to a muslim state they also share borders with china. So two fundamentalist Muslim states right next door to them one with a substantial american military presence.

If the US had any sense they would get as far out of afghanistan as possible and leave them to it.

Afghanistan is in close proximity to one of the LARGEST sources of minerals on earth, the Hindu Kush. Those mountains have never been explored extensively and hardly mined on an modern industrial scale. The potential wealth of the region is staggering. Why should China get their hands on all of it?

Militarily it is strategically significant is it is a back door to China and a tumor in the belly of Russia, look at the mineral wealth of central Asia, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan. Gas and oil is plentiful there. Don't forget Iran, with us in Afghanistan they are surrounded. We can strike them from just about any direction. Same with China. Think of the amount of drugs that are coming out of that country too, somebodies making money there also.
