That'd be no help on account of an Englishman writing the words.

An Englishman wrote the music, but an American wrote the poem that became the words.

So the answer to your question is, of course, Francis Scott Key.

I am guessing that the surprise is the British "composer" that wrote the music to what became a rather popular drinking song.

Our song "My country tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing", etc. is sung to the tune of "God Save the Queen(King)", your Nat'l anthem.

"Land where our father's died, land of the pilgrims pride, from every mountain side, let freedom ring"

Now I'm just bragging I still remember some things! :-)

Every American should know the name Francis Scott Key, but I don't know what's taught these days.

And just where were the bombs bursting in air, and the flag was still there?

Just who the heck was causing all that havoc anyway?

Then they went on to burn down Our Capital.
What happened to Kamala Harris' campaign?
She had the black vote all locked up.
