The President of Ireland - Mary Mcleese.

It's generally accepted that our Mary has been doing a great job here in Ireland.By and large she does what an Irish President should do, look good for the camera, master the art of feel-good platitude and give the impression of caring every time she has to plant a new tree at a community school North or South of Ireland.

But its notgoing to be so good for her this weekend, if reports coming from the United States are anything to go by.

Our Mary is due to receive an honorary degree from Villanova University in Philadelphia on Sunday but the ceremony is now likely to be disrupted by members of the Cardinal Newman Society, a hard-line American Catholic organisation which objects to what they see as Mary's ''disrespect'' towards the Catholic Church.

Dissing the Pope is not something our Mary has ever been accused of before, but according to the entirely reasonable Patrick Reilly, head of the Newman Society says that Our Mary has been strident and on a crusade to have women become priests and that she is totally disrespectfull to the Catholic Church.

Would they have called another Head of State ''disrespectfull'' because they raised a hot-button issue for Catholics if that person was a man?

Also, they are predictably freaked out by performances of The Vagina Monologues, or as they refer it That Play.

Good luck to you Mary McAleese Our President.

I wonder how many members here are from Philadelphia. I'd love a feedback?
