Knock, Knock. Who's There? Earthquake

Post by koan »

I never feel an earthquake when it happens but this time I heard it. I thought someone was knocking at the back door, though it is sealed off due to construction. Then someone ran over and said "did you hear the earthquake??!"

I've heard all kinds of weird descriptions of what it sounded like since then but still kind of surprised that it had a loud sound. That's a little disconcerting. I get worried about my car when it groans at anything. This was the ground my car sits on.

...I'm sort of gathering this one didn't knock down cities and cause tsunamis. Thank heavens for that...

Certainly remember hearing somewhere about the noise of earthquakes. compared to the bellowing of a bull. Bingo! Greek myth: Poseidon the earth shaker was often portrayed as a bull.

I've felt lots of earthquakes... lots and lots of earthquakes... but the one time I heard one, it sounded like a steel beam in my building snapped. I've never heard the ground make a sound though.

I've never been in an earthquake and can't say it's high on my "to do" list either. I must have been a child when I heard about Poseidon and it's such a striking image it stuck.
