Fan was going out on laptop. Nearly the entire computer had to be disassembled. You would think they could make it a little easier. Pic's in next post.

It'll all go back together easily enough, just make sure you put the right screw size back into each hole. Either Dell mark the holes properly or the notes you made while dismantling will tell you.

I went step by step according to the Dell directions, removing the system board was step 14. Removing fan step 16.

And where in that lot does it say take the CPU off the system board. I can't find such an instruction anywhere.

Follow the instructions in Before Working Inside Your Computer.

Remove the hard drive. See Removing the Hard Drive.

Remove the optical drive. See Removing the Optical Drive.

Remove the memory module. See Removing the Memory Module.

Remove the Mini PCI card. See Removing the Mini PCI Card.

Remove the microprocessor thermal-cooling assembly. See Removing the Microprocessor Thermal-Cooling Assembly.

Remove the microprocessor. See Removing the Microprocessor Module.

Remove the hinge cover. See Removing the Hinge Cover.

Remove the keyboard. See Removing the Keyboard.

Remove the display assembly. See Removing the Display Assembly.

Remove the palm rest. See Removing the Palm Rest.

Remove the modem. See Removing the Modem.

Remove the speakers connector. See Removing the Speakers.

Remove the system board. See Removing the System Board.

Disconnect the the fan power cable from the system board.

Turn the system board over and remove the four M2.5 x 5-mm screws

I did as this said to do. Maybe I didn't remove the CPU. I know it had me take out the hard drive and system board. I don't think I removed anything but what it told me to remove.

You notice it currently has nothing slotted into it? The nothing it has slotted into it is the CPU with the 250 pins.

I'm just trying to work out what the microprocessor was that it told him to remove - it looks far too small to be the CPU and looks to be accessible from outside the case?

So far so good. It seems to be working ok. Tommorrow I will try and figure out where the extra screws go. I think I forgot to put some in the systems board.

Congratulations on a job well done - if it works then it didn't really need those left over screws

I must say that I've never had to remove the CPU in any machine I've stripped down unless it is to replace the CPU - it's just an additional risk for no good purpose. Likewise, I've never had to update the BIOS just because I've replaced the CPU either.

Having said that, if it works, don't knock it.

I don't recall ever putting a laptop back together and not having screws left over, they breed once they're put promiscuously together into a cup.

Thanks all for the help, laughs, and encouragement. This morning I pulled the keyboard back out and found where the screws went. Working fine now. I still can't believe that it has to come so far apart just to replace the fan motor.

I replaced the power socket of an Acer Aspire 7520 a while back and that had to strip back to the same extent, with the system board out. The lesson is that if you want to work inside a PC then desktops are designed to make it quick and simple and laptops aren't. Once you get over the nerves, though, both are possible. I prefer laptops these days, they weigh less.
