How Do You View Doomsday Preppers?

Post by Cascadian »

I watched an episode of Nat Geo's "Doomsday Preppers" recently and man, no wonder people think they're wackos:

Doomsday Preppers explores the lives of otherwise ordinary Americans who are preparing for the end of the world as we know it. Unique in their beliefs, motivations, and strategies, preppers will go to whatever lengths they can to make sure they are prepared for any of life’s uncertainties. And with our expert’s assessment, they will find out their chances of survival if their worst fears become a reality.

Doomsday Preppers - National Geographic Channel

What do you think of these people who admit they're actually "preparing" for Armageddon, mutant zombie biker hordes, and bunkering in with their cans of beans and AK-47s to shoot the neighbors? :-5

I grew up on a farm and we always had a pantry, garden, and livestock as a way of life, not of fear.

Whilst I can think of a dozen doomsdays they might legitimately be preparing for, I don't see any of them having a sufficiently high probability to make it worth worrying about.

There are enough real world problems to prepare for without going to look for one-in-a-million scenarios.

I'd worry if some nutter that believed Armageddon was due and he was god's chosen was elected president. Religious nuts with weapons have always caused problems for those around them.

I grew up on a farm and we always had a pantry, garden, and livestock as a way of life, not of fear.Good for them...They have every right to prepare for "doom", although I'm not sure what the hell an AK-47 will do to ensure their survival but whatever, at least they're taking action.

I prepare for doomsday every day actually. I wash my hands frequently, shower, stay out of situations where it's even remotely possible I may prick myself with a used needle, and I eat food periodically. Having said that I'd say my chances of survival is fairly good.

My youngest calculated that if the 2012 prediction was true then taking in leap years the world was supposed to end 7 months ago.

I know people who prepare for the revolution and or invasion of our country . It always involves guns because you have to apparently defend your food source . Which is probably true if a starving hoard comes at ya.

I'm originally from California and grew up with earthquakes as a fairly common occurrence. Moving to Utah in my 40s was an eye opener, they've got a sort of mass hysteria about a huge quake that's going to hit soon. Combine that with the Mormon's belief in stockpiling food anyway, emergency food storage is a big business here. I've found a place that makes big cans of freeze dried food... their potato soup is quite tasty.

If there's a zombie apocalypse, I've already accepted the fact that I'll be one of the first to go. I'm old and slow and if these are fast zombies, there's no way I'll be able to get away.

And we here in the Pacific Northwest are due for the Cascadian Subduction Zone mega-quake...

The CDC spoofed preppers and zombie hordes with some common-sense preparedness tips for ordinary emergencies:

CDC - Blogs - Public Health Matters Blog – Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse

* Water (1 gallon per person per day)

* Food (stock up on non-perishable items that you eat regularly)

* Medications (this includes prescription and non-prescription meds)

* Tools and Supplies (utility knife, duct tape, battery powered radio, etc.)

* Sanitation and Hygiene (household bleach, soap, towels, etc.)

* Clothing and Bedding (a change of clothes for each family member and blankets)

* Important documents (copies of your driver’s license, passport, and birth certificate to name a few)

* First Aid supplies (although you’re a goner if a zombie bites you, you can use these supplies to treat basic cuts and lacerations that you might get during a tornado or hurricane)

That is all pretty basic stuff, for any type of situation. Hurricane, blizzard, earthquake, zombie invasion, Nuclear war, Alien invasion.

Though I also have included in my "emergency rations" AK-47, Makarov 9x18mm, and Colt 1911, with 1000 rounds each. K-Bar, 10 days' worth supply of Twinkies.

And my entire collection of MAD magazine.

Wacko's ? Why ?

Many ancient civilisations recorded their beliefs that the world would end one day. Are they any more whacko than the Christian faith who follow the ancient teachings of Jesus Christ ?

The world Is littered with crators where asteroids have hit the earth over millions of years.

Why does anyone have such a view that this will cease simply because man has evolved enough to Invent the television ?

Oscar, the people PROFILED on the television show, as I understand from reading some of the reviews about it, were deliberately selected for their rather "outside the mainstream" beliefs as to why preparing for Armageddon was necessary. THEY'RE the ones I'm labeling as wackos -- not sensible people who store some extra canned food, grow a garden, raise a few chickens, and try to be ready for economic downturns wherever they live.

I'm not talking about sensible people who store some extra canned food, grow a garden, raise a few chickens, and try to be ready for economic downturns wherever they live. I am talking about the one's who prepare for Armageddon.... the wacko's as you put It.

Why are they any different to a religious believer?

It only needs one nucleur bomb In the wrong hands or one asteroid.

Oh, I see what you're saying. Yes, in that case, the label I used is incorrect and unfair to them.

Simple enough, anyone who devotes a large proportion of their life preparing for an event which has a 0.0000001% probability of happening within their lifetime is a wacko.
