Soldiers of all nations who do despicable things are motivated by the trauma of war. They go there to represent their countries under false pretences and actually become targets of blame. The only one responsible for their actions are the authorities who placed them, unprepared, in a position of vulnerability.
If a manager always blames his employees... how long does that excuse carry weight?

If a manager always blames his employees... how long does that excuse carry weight? The people who send the soldiers into war theaters are not the managers of the foot soldier, that distinction would be the rank immediately above that of a soldier, while the others [authorities who placed them, unprepared, in a position of vulnerability] are the architects of the war.

you have to trace it back to the roots of why we enter into society in the first place.

To be fair...
Absolutely! It's not just the soldiers. So why do we hold them to a more accountable standard? Why not be angry at the corporate crime that inspires an arms race and requires wars to feed the economy?
Why blame the managers who were distracted from an education based on independent thinking and, instead, culled into a position of damage control expertise? Groomed for a position of taking the blame and paid generously for their belief that it would never come to that.
Why do we agree to social contracts? What do they give us that we can't find through other means?
I find that the key to fixing a problem is in asking the right questions and most people have not the patience to go far enough back in the chain.

But most people aren't given automatic weapons and told that killing other humans would be a valiant idea.

They are each individuals responsible for their own actions if they commit an atrocity, a principle enshrined in the laws that came out of ww2. I was following orders is not a defence.
The authorities in democratic countries like the US and the UK and canada come to that are elected by the people to do their bidding. If we are getting involved in pointless wars it's because we let them away with conning us in to believing we have no right to protest.
There is no such thing as a just war there is just war. If you do go to war it should be as a last resort when all else has failed. Sadly real life isn't like that

We get born in to a society of one kind or another in some ways life is what you do about it while you are here.

More US soldiers died from suicide than from combat. We don't seem to think that deserves as much attention.
