The Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Post by spot »

This may well be the most succinct and accurate statement of the problem I've ever seen, and I commend the author: any peace plans co-authored by the United States and Israel would be untenable and that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will remain intractable as long as U.S. policy is unduly beholden to Israel. It's from Failed favoritism toward Israel - The Washington Post and it was written by a gentleman who at least calls a spade a spade, Prince Turki bin Faisal Al Saud, ex-Director General of Saudi Arabia's intelligence agency Al Mukhabarat Al A'amah and one-time Saudi ambassador to the United Kingdom and the United States. He is, for anyone who follows these matters, generally considered to be on America's side when it comes to US foreign affairs (which essentially means he'd like to bring down the Iranians).

As for "the Israeli-Palestinian conflict", have we all finally recognized that there can never be a two-state solution, that dividing so small a space by so convoluted a wall isn't ever going to work? The state of Israel - by all means call it that for all time, names are irrelevant - occupies the ground covered by the pre-1948 UN mandate. What matters is the moral integrity of the Israeli Constitution and the laws of the land. Does the world have a place for an apartheid nation or does it not? If the rest of us can tolerate the abuse then the Gaza and West Bank Bantustans will stay as they are, unincorporated and subject to 100-for-1 IDF death-squad reprisal attacks which leaves events permanently in the hands of extremist splinter factions. Personally I'd rather see the laws changed, like they finally were in South Africa.
