San Francisco
I am in San Francisco at the moment in a hotel in "Japantown". Have a bit of business to do and then a two hour drive home. How SF has changed since I lived here as a student in the late 50's. I had a REnault Dauphine then, and negotiating the hills of SF in that little gutless vehicle was a real chore. Japantown is new to me with many hotels (Japanese Theme) and outstanding eateries. The weather sucks----heavy downpour and high winds yesterday and today. Strange weather worldwide. San Francisco Sourdough Bread and Dungenese Crab is the highlight of this little trip. :guitarist

Living so close to San Francisco I have been there many many times since actually living there, but what changes I notice most of all over the years is the attire. There was a time when most all the women that you saw in the downtown area were wearing high heeled shoes, hats, purses, and men, were in suits and jackets. There was an aura of formality, almost like Boston at that time. The 60's and the Hippie Phase brought with it an attire dumb down that has continued to the present.
That's not good or bad in my view, just a change. I find it interesting that San Francisco has always been a haven for Gays and when I was in high school most of us knew and associated with gay folks. No big deal. but it's probably why most (not all) people in the Bay Area are more tolerant of gays.

Lon, I think the casual attire can be attributed to our changing culture, rather than to any one city. This is my experience of life in Chicago: In the 50's and early 60's, we dressed up for church and us girls always wore dresses or skirts to school. For a trip downtown to a museum with our parents, we were dressed up. I agree there has been a change in general attire, but that occurs in all US cities. So quit looking at the people and enjoy the sites of San Francisco. :wah:

Oh---I understand and have no problem with it. What the hell, if folks want to wear jeans to weddings and funerals, so be it. It's much more comfortable any way.
