The 2010 Midterm elections
Well, the crazies have won the primaries, it's now down to the electorate. I wonder whether they'll put them into office.
Hang on, I've got a bumper sticker I made earlier...

We'll get a good feel for how hell-bent the average American is once the votes are counted, won't we.
Any bets?

No bets from me. There is so much dissention among the electorate, the Rethugs and the Dembrats that anything is possible. I haven't a clue.
Maybe there are lots like me that haven't joined any particular Band Wagon yet and are just biding their time.

Out of interest Lon, can you remember who your Vice President is at the moment or has he disappeared the way Hubert Humphrey did? Does he appear much on your mainstream news channels?

Just a minute -----let's see----It's Joe something----Joe Friden? not that's not it----Biden---that's it -----Now I remember Joe Biden.
Seriously though, he is in the news daily on TV---Papers and Mags --- He has a fairly high profile.
It appears that he is not getting much coverage abroad though

So which of the cranky Senatorial candidates have you seen much of on the news? Christine O’Donnell won't take Delaware but there's wins forecast for Rand Paul in Kentucky, Joe Miller in Alaska, Mike Lee in Utah and (who knows) there's always a chance on Sharron Angle in Nevada. I'm not sure anyone can call which party's going to have a knife-edge majority in either the House or the Senate but the President's not going to come out of it with the backing he's had so far. Which leaves you with two years of stalemate in store.
As for the 2012 elections it's down to whether the economy still hurts. And yes of course it will, quite likely harder than it's hurting already. Hence my bumper sticker.

Caleb Boggs, having read a bit about him, seems to have been an ideal American, the country could do with more like him. What an impressive chap.

What an impressive chap. There is quite alot of irony here with Delaware but nothing to rightfully define "bellwether" as a legitimate word. I sincerely doubt a republican will win Delaware for the Senate, and the House is pretty much a given. O'Donnell winning the republican primary only assures a democratic victory across the board.

That was the initial thread question - "I wonder whether they'll put them into office".

A republican winning Delaware might be what's needed for that state but as per usual the wealthy will be the ones to benefit. The people like O'Donnell there because she finally represents a neighborly face, something the common folk there havn't seen since as you mentioned James Boggs. I was mainly speaking in reference to Delaware across the board.
You think the race will come down to Delaware?
I can't see republipukes winning for the next 8 years.

The 2010 Midterm elections
Correct me if I'm wrong but is it not possible for a president to elected, even if they don't have a majority of the overall vote, simply by winning enough of the states especially those with the most electoral college votes?
Is it not also the case that the reason obama won the primaries rather than clinton was because of proportional representation?
We have a similar problem with our first past the vote system - you get MP's winning a seat despite the fact the majority of voters actually voted against the winning candidate. Neither the Thatcher or Blair government ever had more than about a third of the votes cast yet ended up running the place.
