Golly. The blast, which threw 13 people into the water, was reported by a commercial helicopter company about 0930 local time (1330 GMT) [...] It is unclear if the structure is a production platform or a drilling rig. You'd think Louisiana would be better off without them - these deep rigs seem not to pay anything toward the state exchequer at all.

The Coast Guard says 13 people were onboard the rig; all people are now accounted for and one injured person is en route to Terrebonne General Hospital.

While the thread's stood waiting for news, did anyone else watch Spike Lee's Louisiana film on Hurricane Katrina, "When the Levees Broke"? It was shown on TV in the UK this week, I was impressed. It mentioned the Gulf oil industry in passing, as far as the uselessness it was to Louisiana's finances.

Well living La. the Pres. of theoil and gas assoc, is really trying to down play it. so he is basically saying. this happens all the time. not a big blow out like the last one. everyone who was on the production platform. has been released from the hosp. i know the company is in the process of selling out to another company. they have sited ten times for different infractions. it is a very dangerous job. my late husband did it for years.

Just like last time, no one seems real interested in this. Hopefully that is all that is similar to last time.

Latest Gulf oil rig problem differs from BP spill

The news reports on this one suggest it wasn't drilling, wasn't connected to a well, spilled at most the fuel it had on board at the time, and now it's just scrap metal in need of sinking. Not a crisis really.

Have we all come round to the view that the BP Deepwater event, though it cost a lot in compensation, is a storm in a teacup? If not, why not?

but this time. there isn't any oil leaking. like i said. the workers who risk their lives on these kinds of jobs. yes they are underpaid, and with no unions. anything goes. if these jobs were in the industeral states. the average worker would start out at least $20 an hour. a lot of rough necks,( laborers )make less then $!5 AN HOUR. with lots of risk. the insurance is HIGH. or not worth a darn. it is a hard life.

I wasn't referring to FG actually. Folks didn't start paying attention until it started washing up on shore last time... until we had pictures of oil slicked animals to broadcast and publish. Then everyone got their shorts in a knot.

And....might I add....just because we do not respond in a thread, does not mean we are not concerned. Ofcourse, I do feel these oil spills will have long termed effects on our environement. How could they not?
