Ironman 2010 - In Coeur d'Alene

Post by Tombstone »

My daughter and I had the pleasure of heading down into town last Sunday (June 27, 2010) to watch Ironman. I'll attach some videos and photos to give you some behind the scenes flavor. (Courtesy of my iPhone.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where did Ironman begin and what is it?

On February 18, 1978, John and Judy Collins, triathletes from California, introduced triathlon to Hawaii by creating and staging the first endurance triathlon, the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon, a swim/bike/run course that circled the island of Oahu. The Ironman course linked the 2.4 mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim, an estimated 112-miles of the 115-mile Round Oahu Bike Course and the 26.2 mile Honolulu Marathon.

Fast-forward 31 years and you have the world's most prestigious one-day endurance event!

MOTTO TO LIVE BY:

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming.

WOO HOO!!, what a ride!!!"

Ironman 2010 - In Coeur d'Alene

Post by Tombstone »

Andy Potts’ highly anticipated first Ironman start outside Hawaii lived up to the entire prerace hype. He trailed men’s swim leader, John Flanagan, out of the water by 30 seconds. Potts, a former Olympian and ITU competitor, showed his transition speed skills by collecting all but three seconds of his deficit by the time the leading pair hit the bike course.

Potts proceeded to pull away from Flanagan in the opening miles of the 112 mile bike. At 37 miles, Flanagan had slipped back to 3:03 off the pace with Matty White, Raul Pereira, Chris McDonald, Michael Lovato, Blake Becker, Matt Lieto and Jemani Francis all hovering between 6:00 and 8:00 of the leading pair.

By 90 miles, Potts had Australia’s Luke Bell behind him, but Bell was still over 7:30 behind.

Bell was the only one who made any significant ground into the Potts over the course of the bike. By the start of the run he narrowed Potts’ lead to 3:54 and it appeared that Potts may have a nick in his armour after all. 2008 Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene champion, Tom Evans, made his first appearance in the top ten by starting the run in sixth position, but was an insurmountable 9:55 back of the leader. Evans surge towards the front never materialized and he eventually pulled out.

Potts appeared to struggle towards the late stages of the run, but by then he had sealed the victory, winning his first Ironman in three attempts in 8:24:54 (46:28, 4:42:04 and 2:52:48). Courtney Ogden managed to move into second in a time of 8:38:17.

Full write-up here.
