since i posted a couple of pics of what i do as a hobby, i have had a few people ask if i would do a seperate thread to share them

i build models for a hobby.....i find it a geat stressbuster....im no expert by any stretch but its something i enjoy doing and thats good enough for me

i built model planes as a kid but by the time i got to mid teens other things distracted me :-3 :D and gave it up......after i got divorced 3 years ago and moved into my own place i came across an unbuilt Lotus 7 kit whilst unpacking and thought it would give me something to do for a few nights......unfortunatly i got hooked again :wah:

these days i build mostly cars and bikes although im happy to have a go at anything.....recently ive got into something called 'whiffing'...short for 'what if........'.......take a kit and modify it into something it shouldnt be....for instance i built a F16 of the Republic of Texas Air force a while back :D

i am a member of a modelling forum on the net which is why theres my name on most of the pics ...........if you see a battery in the pic then its a treble a battery to give some idea of scale (its 1 3/4 inch or 4.5 cm tall)....cars are always in 1/24 scale so tend to be @ 6 or 7 inch/15 cm long

Austin Mini Cooper rally car

Jaguar E-type

these were built for a Group Build on my moedlling forum where the theme was 'British Cars'

if you are wondering how i wire up an engine the wire is 28 gauge jewellry wire....the plug boots are made using a wire from a dead usb cable but stripping out the actual wire to leave a hollow tube from the insulation, cut it to about 4 mm and insert the jewellry wire into it...use a 0.5mm drill to put a hole in the cylnder heads......scratch build a distributer with some plastic tubing

these are 1/72 scale

the F16 is from the Republic of Texas Air Force.........there is a big back story to this....how a few states got tired of Obamas administartions attitude to immigration from mexico and so declare independance

i also have a major project on the go in terms of 'what ifs'..........i have a big back story of what would happen if WW2 had gone differently....hence Me262 night fighter in Argentine Air Force scheme and the MiG 3 in RAF 'African' scheme

planes really are kinda new to me.....lot harder than cars and bikes im finding

Wow, BW, they are super! Have you had to set one of your rooms aside as a store room ? You certainly have a gift for modelling! What materials do you use, and are they 'kits' that you make up? I'm afraid I daren't get involved with model-making, as we just haven't got the room for it, but it is something that I would love to do, if I had the time. My mother always used to say I loved making little things, as I used to spend hours making dolls house furniture from balsa wood and modelled 'little people' from plasticine. When I'd been married for a few years, I visited Gee Dee's in Nottingham and was very taken with an 'N' gauge Hornby steam locomotive train set, with rails etc. I bought it with a view to making an 'N' gauge layout, which I felt would be just the job as a hinged pull down set up which could be lifted back against a wall out of the way, when not in use. However, time and family responsibilities prevented me from achieving this little ambition of mine. A few years later, I sold the complete lot and made a decent profit - I needed the money to pay some bills !!! Maybe, when we manage to settle into our proper retirement destination, I may feel like taking up this engrossing hobby once again. You never know what the future holds, do you?

They're astonishing. I suspect my hands shake more than yours do and I'd need floodlights over my shoulder to see enough if I tried.

How often do you branch out into extra scratchbuilding once you've got the core kit together?

it all depends....most things are made 'out of the box'..........if there is an engine thats going to be on show i like to wire it up.....i have put 'carpet' in cars before now using stuff meant for dolls houses, but i want to try a flocking technique sometime.......i do make my own decals sometimes, custom license plates and badges on an inkjet printer...as for paint, i use an airbrush so that makes things easier however that e-type jag was a little awkward when it came to masking up the Union Jack

im no expert but i learn something new with every one i do :D

Your models are impressive,Beowulf. :) I am glad for you that you found this hobby. I know this takes alot of patience, but you enjoy doing it and that makes all the difference. I do hope you have a place to display your models.

Hubby's hobby is woodworking. We have his handiwork in various places in our home. He's made picture frames, shelves, lamps, small talbles, door knockers, and dollhouses.

My hobbies are reading and sketching faces. Just give me a pencil, a a sketching pad, and a face, and I just go with it. :wah:

Perhaps you'd like to give us a precis of the Battle of Casablanca, Morocco, 1990?

It reminds me of a curious footnote to history, that the last time a French battleship engaged the enemy it was while attacking the US Navy off Casablanca. It was still in use when the French invaded Egypt in 1956, too. But I digress.

sure....but i shall just copy and paste from the relevant thread on my modelling forum cos it would take me far too long to retype it :wah:

I came across a history discussion forum recently...........one that discussed alternative timelines.......as in what if the Roman empire was still in existence, who would they be fighting?, would they have colonised America?,if not would American Indians developed a rival culture, what technology would they have...................or.................what if Napoleon hadn't lost at Waterloo...........would the French Empire gone on to rule large portions of the globe............things like that...........must admit I was kind of hooked

...............then, a few days later................I came across a modelling forum doing pretty much the same thing..............a what-if type of place................so they would be building planes in the markings of the French Empirical Air Force or the Holy Roman Air Force or the Souix Nation Air Force...................you get the picture

So I've been cooking up an alternative time line from 1939..........what if it had all gone very different

I would like to point out that this is entirely fiction, it does not reflect any political or personal beliefs I might have...............it's just a story with some references to historical or real facts

1937

Japanese forces expand Empire in South East Asia

1939

Axis Forces of Germany and Italy invade Poland, Britain and France declare war on Axis Powers

1940

Axis Forces over run Western Europe including Britain and Ireland. British Royal Family and Governments from Britain, France, Holland, Belgium and several other European nations manage to escape to Canada. Majority of Royal Navy manage to evade Axis Navy to either Canada or thro Suez Canal to Indian Ocean.

French Government is 'lent' Quebec for duration of war......it and the other European governments pledge allegiance to the British Commonwealth for duration of war.............have common aim of reclaiming home territories in Europe

Main problem is lack of aircraft left behind in Europe...............aircraft factories were already producing materiel such as Hurricanes, Anson and Hampden's...........Avro technicians who managed to escape brought copies of plans for the Lancaster which is rushed into production...........Australian factories start production of Hurricane and Spitfires

Spain and Japan formally accepted into Axis Alliance

Axis Forces expand into Africa............taking over the colonies of France and Belgium easily whilst northern countries such as Libya and Tunisia are occupied quickly but expansion runs out of steam due to extended lines of supply

1941

February

Japanese Naval Forces destroy U.S. Naval facility at Pearl Harbour in premptive strike...............American losses are heavy, losing all battleships and carriers of the Pacific fleet along with many other surface ships. Reaction of American Government and population is one of horror. Rather than wanting to take part in the war and seeing an increasingly more militaristic Canada, America closes its borders with Canada and becomes increasingly isolationist. Cuts off communication with Commonwealth.

June

Axis Forces invade USSR from the west................Japan seeing no threat from America since its attack on Pearl Harbour ceases its expansion in the direction of India and invades USSR from the south through China.

1942 to 1944

Axis Alliance Forces occupy portions of USSR territory but are progress is slow due to combination of bad winters on the European Front and the ability of the Russians to use large forces of infantry and tanks. Large manufacturing facilities producing vehicles and aircraft situated in Siberia.

Soviets and Commonwealth enter a trade agreement................Commonwealth supply Lancaster and Halifax heavy bombers to USSR in exchange for Yak, Mig and Lav fighters. The trade route is across the Pacific, British Columbia to Siberia. Commonwealth acquired aircraft find their way to Africa/Asia via sea convoy. Fortunately the naval forces of the Commonwealth are substantial due to most ships managing to escape back in 1940 but merchant shipping is still lost to Axis u-boats in mid Atlantic.

Commonwealth Forces continue to hold Axis Forces in Africa and Asia..............little ground given away by either side. Axis Forces cannot expand due to lack of troops as main are being used in attack on USSR; Commonwealth Forces do not have sufficient air power or ground vehicles on their side.

1945

War against Japan is brought to a sudden end. Russian developed nuclear weapons are delivered to Japanese ports/storage facilities of Niigata, Muroran, Kagoshima and Shanghai by Commonwealth Navy submarines. A fifth device launched at Yokoyama fails to detonate.

Since no bombers in Soviet or Commonwealth arsenals had the range to strike mainland Japan small yield nuclear devices of around 8 kilotons are delivered by torpedo from CN submarines over a 4 day period. Combined casualties are @ 150,000. Japanese Government offer immediate unconditional surrender. Axis Alliance in Europe broker for ceasefire, returning to pre-invasion borders but keeping Poland, Czechoslovakia, etc.

With forces not deployed in Europe, Axis powers again look to Africa with its rich resources of oil, ore and slave labour, they expand their empire east and south against increasingly struggling Commonwealth forces.

USSR takes over Japanese Empire in Asia.............Military Occupation of Japanese homelands, installs puppet Communist governments in China, Mongolia, Viet Nam and many other countries. Becomes Communist Bloc.

Large quantities of Japanese war booty including aircraft and ships 'donated' to the Commonwealth.

1950

War in Africa is stalemated...........either side making significant progress.

Argentina formally joins Axis Alliance after General Peron seeks trade agreement with Germany and Spain.

Troop/supply convoys start from Argentina to Africa and Europe. Commonwealth enforce naval presence in Caribbean colonies of Trinidad and Jamaica, start patrols to attack Axis convoys and to protect Commonwealth convoys en route to Africa.

Various Nations on the American continent grow increasingly concerned. USA is concerned by aggressive Canada.........central American nations, especially Panama worried by large Commonwealth Navy in Caribbean, South American countries alarmed by increasingly aggressive Fascist Argentina.

Continental American Treaty Organisation is formed. All countries apart from Argentina and Commonwealths colonies join. Basic ideals are the mutual defence from non-members and increase of economic trade between member states. CATO becomes isolationist, keeping minimum contact with the outside world. USA becomes main producer of aircraft for CATO.

1950 to 1970 period

The war enters a lengthy period of stagnation in Africa.

Becomes a largely Naval War in North and South Atlantic with both sides producing Carriers as opposed to battleships, both sides raiding each other's convoys

1952 – Queen Elizabeth 2 takes to the throne after the death of King George 6....reaffirms desire to retake British Isles from Axis Alliance

Comm Bloc takes increasingly back seat, has no desire to fight Axis Alliance directly but is happy to supply aircraft to Commonwealth. The Iron Wall is erected running entire length of border between USSR and Axis Alliance, some 2500 kilometres, and takes 9 years to build. Both Axis Alliance and USSR have increasingly internal problems with Resistance/Guerrillas.....................the Axis in particular have problems as Royal Navy submarines supply arms to groups in western European countries. Comm Bloc forces spread thin enforcing control in satellite countries.

1957

Mussolini assassinated by S.A.S. whilst visiting Italian troops in Libya......replaced by his son Vittorio who is a hard line Fascist

1963

Commonwealth detonate their first nuclear device at Moruroa in French Polynesia............USSR displeased since they are no longer sole nuclear power, especially when it's discovered that the weapon has been engineered using Soviet technology. The Yokohama device didn't detonate since it had been 'acquired' by the Commonwealth Secret Service prior to launch and made to look like it had failed to detonate to fool KGB and Soviet technicians onboard the submarine. It was used as a basis for development at the secret base of Woomera, South Australia. Commonwealth nuclear arsenal will never grow to a sizable quantity due to the difficulty in obtaining adequate quantities of suitable Uranium or Plutonium from Commonwealth controlled territories. Those built are kept as 'ultimate deterrent' and will be never used.

The Soviet-Commonwealth 'Special Relationship' cools considerably. Military equipment deliveries are restricted and reduced, although never actually dry up (the Commonwealth/Axis war is seen as a proving ground for its weapons by the USSR) forcing the Commonwealth to continue its program of reverse engineering Soviet aircraft at its factories in Canada and Australia, and also speed up its program of designing and building its own aircraft.

1972

Adolf Hitler dies of natural causes aged 83. Germany plunged into a power struggle between various factions seeking control. Eventually Reinhard Heydrich, then aged 68 and Head of the SS, emerges as the next Fuhrer. Seen as a hard line Nazi, he invests heavily in development of new technologies as a way of continuing the war with the Commonwealth.

1977

Queen Elizabeth 2 dies at the Royal Estate in Calgary, Canada, as a victim of the Influenza Pandemic sweeping across the Northern Hemisphere which claims the lives of in excess of 5,500,000 people in North America and Europe. A vaccine is developed at the Medical Research Facility in Toronto, which is traded with the Comm Bloc in exchange for technology. In an unprecedented move contact is made with CATO and the vaccine is donated in an attempt to forge a new relationship, although grateful CATO maintains its position of isolation. It is unknown if the Axis Alliance develops its own vaccine or allows the pandemic to run its course incurring greater numbers of fatalities amongst its population.

Queen Anne 2 ascends to the Commonwealth throne, although only 27 she proves to be a popular Monarch with a no nonsense, stern but fair attitude. Again she reaffirms the Commonwealths aim of releasing the hold of the Axis Alliance on occupied Europe. To avoid the epidemic she resides for next 2 years in the Royal Palace in Brisbane, Australia, where she was at the time of her mother's death undertaking diplomatic duties.

1982

Fledgling 'Space Race'

Both Comm Bloc and the Axis Alliance are launching satellites for spy purposes. Comm Bloc has bases in Baikonur and Kurshiro, Japan. The Axis launch from a base at Santa Cruz, Argentina.

Axis Alliance detonates their first nuclear device on the occupied Falkland Islands. Using a satellite launch vehicle, the 10 kiloton device is delivered to the islands which is still occupied with Falklanders (since they had been occupied in 1952 the Commonwealth had not been able to reclaim the islands as it would have taken too many resources which could not be spared, Argentina had allowed the Falklanders to remain but the Island had been heavily fortified with a garrison and naval base which had been evacuated only days before the test of the device and delivery system). Test proves that the satellite launch system can be used as a weapon delivery system.

Commonwealth respond with a Task Force made up of ships from the Caribbean and African Fleets

CATO becomes worried due to presence of nuclear weapons on the Continental Americas being tested by a clearly belligerent Argentinean Junta. After an Emergency Meeting of the CATO Council at its headquarters in Mexico City they agree to take punitive action against Argentina to ensure the safety of its member nations. Opens contact with Commonwealth to seek assistance.

Joint action is taken against Argentina, Commonwealth launch air strikes along the coast from carriers attached to the Task force, combined CATO forces invade by land and air from Chile and Brazil.

As CATO forces close in on Buenos Aries, 3 more missiles are launched from Santa Cruz.

The targets of Mexico City, Panama City and Huston (on the very edge of the missiles range) are hit with Nuclear weapons causing massive loss of life.

Argentina surrender to CATO 3 weeks after invasion begins.

CATO decide to join with Commonwealth Forces as they now see the Axis Alliance as a threat and have desire to reply for the attacks on its member nations.

1983

CATO supply aircraft to Commonwealth, Commonwealth supply training to very inexperienced CATO military

1985

CATO Forces land in South West Africa to build up numbers prior to the start of an operation to force the Axis Alliance out of Africa later in the year. Comm Bloc sign Non-Aggression Pact with Commonwealth/CATO.

1990

Last enclave of Axis Alliance in Africa, in Morocco, surrender to combined Commonwealth/CATO Forces.

1992

Commonwealth forces invade Spain and Turkey, CATO invade Italy in a joint assault on mainland Europe. Axis Alliance Forces are no match for superior numbers of Commonwealth/CATO.

1993

World War 2 ends. Governments of Great Britain, France and other Western European countries are reinstalled. Queen Anne 2 takes up residence in Buckingham Palace.

CATO takes on role of helping former Axis countries rebuild and giving aid to liberated countries

1994

Captured Axis leaders tried for war crimes in Toulouse, France. Either executed or imprisoned in specially built facility on Corsica

2000

Argentina formally accepted as probationary member of CATO

British Commonwealth and French Colonial Empire sign Mutual Trade Agreement to encourage trade between them.

2002

European nations form NATO.

Military coup in China signals start of dissolution of Comm Bloc.

2005

Comm Bloc dissolves into separate nations of which some ally to create mutual defence organisations based on CATO

And if you are wondering about the Queen Anne bit................Prince Charles died in 1974 leading his tank regiment in to battle in Libya............she was the Queens only surviving child since Prince Philip died in 1958 when his ship HMS Daring was torpedoed off the coast of South West Africa whilst on convoy escort duties......no Prince Philip = no Prince Andy or Eddie

I notice they're invariably models of machines. Do you ever construct realistic representations of lifeforms? Budgies, say, or bears, or Billie Piper?

oh gosh hun, you did have a rough time with that primer coming off.

I could never do 1cm work, you need a steady hand and I don't have one.

only need the steady hand to put the tape on, and theres a trick with that ;).....all the painting is done by spraying with an airbrush
