A Reuters story said that:
"The Netherlands has discovered its first case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the human variant of "mad cow disease", the government said on Thursday."
The interior ministry said in a statement a patient at a hospital in the central town of Utrecht had been diagnosed with the disease and said it had informed European authorities.

Us Canadians have a problem with the states, especially the province I come from. We are huge cattle suppliers to the USA and when we got hit with 1 cow diagnosed with mad cow, the USA shut us down and caused huge loss's and I believe the Japanese followed suit and quit importing Canadian Beef. It was a devistating blow to our economy, and just recently the border between us and the states opened up only to find there is more controversy going on.

In April 1996, the topic of Winfrey's show was mad cow disease, an outbreak of which had occurred in Britain. The disease in cattle has been linked to a related disease in humans that kills people by slowing destroying brain tissue.
Though there has not been any outbreak of mad cow disease in the United States, a guest on Winfrey's show, Howard Lyman, criticized the practice of feeding processed livestock to cattle, which has been linked to the outbreak in Europe. Winfrey responded that Lyman's remarks "just stopped me cold from eating another burger."

You have to wonder at the scientists at the biotech companies that thought it was a good idea to feed prcossed cattle to their brethern in the first place. Most people would have the common sense gut instinct to realise it might not be a good idea.
One of the trade conflicts between the US and the EU is that we banned US beef because you use growth hormones in your cattle that are banned in the EU.

It's pictured as being a simple trade war with the eu trying to curb us imports by unfair means but there is a lot more to it than that. After BSE and e-coli outbreaks maybe we have learned to a bit more cynical now when food companies try and tell us to trust them.
There was an incident in Italy where hormones used to promote growth in chickens got in to the water supply-the men started growing breasts. On one level it's funny but it's also something that commercial interests alone should not be allowed to decide. imo. Next time you have a hamburger try asking what it was fed on.

One would perhaps welcome a trade embargo, in view of the "carbon cost" of
the moving around of foodstuffs... buy local stuff

If you really feel like getting yourself on a downer have a look at what they put on the crops nowadays. If the meat in the burger doesn't get you the lettuce leaf might instead.

Isolation from Cattle of a Prion Strain Distinct from That Causing Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy more bad news for the meat industry is the above report which indicates that there may be other prions causing similar symptoms that the scientists simply haven't been looking for.
I still believe that some meat in the diet is better than none. So I'll continue to eat meat. But those who life in the UK should be aware that buying your meat directly from the farm isn't more expensive than the Supermarket and by doing this you can be assured of it's quality and see it's a grass fed, rather than feedlot fattened animal.
A A Eating a Mediterranean-Style Diet Can Cut Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease Up to 40% If you look at a food pyramid for the Meditteranean diet you will see red meat is a monthly rather than daily choice.
It's also the case, particularly when eating out, that the portion size offered (and in most cases consumed) is 3 times the official standard meat portion that health authorities consider appropriate. So if we are eating too much too often we are asking for trouble.

The answer to pesticides on food is simply to grow your own. Why buy your veg in plastic bags when you can fetch it straight from the garden for less effort and less cost?
