Why are people so stupid when driving in snow?
We are, at the moment, in the thick of a blizzard and there is already an inch covering the road ! It could be an interesting night as it has only been coming down for just over half an hour ! We live on a hill and our sitting room overlooks a residential road which has a reasonably steep incline - most interesting in these sort of conditions :yh_rotfl
It just surprises me so much that people seem to think that by having a heavy foot on the throttle, they will make progress ! I've just hooted with laughter at some pillock doing that very thing - he's now decided to abandon his driving and left his car where it sort of stopped, mostly on the opposite pavement ! You would have thought that once he had started to slither side to side, that he might have realised that he was doing it all wrong - it did sound as if he was in first gear ! Revving engine, sliding side to side, brilliant ! Stupid boy !!!:rolleyes:
Our car is well out of harm's way off the road and on some grass. We are four-wheel drive so I expect we will be able to get off the grass, should we need to. It is also on a downhill slope, so all we would need to do was take the handbrake off and just let it roll carefully forward.
Two nights ago we noticed a car very close to our neighbour's parked car (we have a cctv camera and saw it on our monitor), so we went out to see if we could be of any help. Another neighbour came along and they managed to push the car back far enough so the driver could turn and go past the parked car. Apparently the driver had braked gently at the junction (on a downhill slope) and was gently sliding towards the parked car as he was endeavouring to reverse away from this obstacle. We discovered that our neighbour was out, so I took a photo of the incident, fortunately the vehicles hadn't got any damage. I posted a print out of the incident through my neighbours letterbox and she now parks on the grass and off the road!

Why are people so stupid when driving in snow?
Today has been crazy, roads closed all over the place. One bus driver hit 12 stationary cars, a 35 car pile up, A38 closed because of a pile up involving numerous cars, the list is endless. I have seen a few complete idiots today.

Hmmm Could be that they are phoning their wife on the mobile and the car hits Ice resuting In the car landing on an Innocent home-owners lawn.
However, Mr O did apologise profusley to the Innocent home owner and offered to pay for any damage to his lawn and fence.

I got snowed in today we've had about eight inches of snow on top of stuff frozen from the day before-last time we had anything like this it was back in the 80's. I live down an incline round a corner and up a slope. It's the first time the weather has actually stopped me getting out. usually it's some pillock that gets stuck and just abandons their car. Yesterday I had to help a neighbour push her car back in to her parking space- she was just going to leave it in the middle of the road blocking six households and get a taxi. Just because they get stuck they think everybody will. While I was helping my wife came out, cleared the snow off her car, got in and drove off-She had been parked next to my neighbour whose expression made the effort worthwhile. :yh_rotfl
Why do people who don't like driving in snow or are frightened by it go out and try and drive in it. Stay at home you moron:-5:-5.

people here, are in to much of a rush, they forget their car or even their 4X4 cannot stop.
some, shouldn't even be driving in snow, its obvious they never learned how.
most don't have snow tires, idiots.
they say on the news to stay at home, well, try telling your employer that.
Toronto never closes down, with 4 million people, its impossible.
So you go prepared, leave well in advance, taking your time as you know your not going to get anywhere anyway.
full tank of gas
blankets in the back
but that's also easier said than done, just to many idiots out there!

Yup, having a bit of a cold spell here (by Irish standards), we have some ice on the roads, all the radios stations saying ‘be careful and slow down’.
Two killed in a road accident last night (just before Christmas) and car accidents everywhere.
They don’t slow down, they don’t avoid going out if they do not have to (lack of planning), and then they drive like it is a warm summer day, try passing the cars that are slowing them down, following too closely and not adjusting their driving habits at all.
Bad drivers.

So guys, excuse my ignorance:o but how do you drive on ice?
Seriously I have no idea. I've had to put chains on before but that's about it.

First thing you do is avoid driving at all if possible.
If not possible, you drive slowly and avoid making any sudden changes such to acceleration, breaking or any sudden turns. Takes the turns slowly and ease into and out of them.
Leave a good distance from the car in front of you, when you think it is OK, then back off even a bit more.
If you have a stick shift, use your gear changes to assist you in slowing down reducing the amount of breaking that you need to do.
Then if you still happen to go into a skid, try to keep your car straight, which means you need to steer your car with the skid, (instinct may tell you to steer the other way but that would put you into a spin).
So, if the back of your car is skidding out to the left, steer to the left to keep the car in line. This still can be dangerous so be careful.
The biggest risk, and the one you can’t control, is the other arsholes on the road. If someone is following you to closely, try to create the opportunity to let them pass you to get rid of them.
The bigger the vehicle the harder it is to stop, so give right-of-way to trucks and busses if you can.
Other than that you are at the mercy of other dirvers. Just be aware of who and what is around you.

'If you have a stick shift, use your gear changes to assist you in slowing down reducing the amount of breaking that you need to do.'
I do this with my automatic. bring it down to first, the engine slows down.
works well on hills, trying to get up or coming down, and turning corners.

Excellent advice, right on the mark!
That's everything I used to do when I drove in that stuff!!
I also did one thing more that worked out great for me.
I would leave my house to go to work at "5am" (or earlier sometimes, my wife said I was crazy) instead of the normal 7:30am. At 5am, I found that there were very few cars on the roads, which made my driving a lot more relaxed for me, by not having to watch out for hundreds of dufuses on the road. And of course, on a non-work day, I just stayed home!!!
