- one major huge place here , they take in strays, injured wildlife, all animals that have been cruelty dealt with including all mills.

-no longer wanted house pets are left outside at their doors.

they offer a low adoption fee.....you must go through a rigorous screening process to see if you qualify to own a pet...many are not aloud.:sneaky:

I love this idea....its just fabulous.

I have contributed to them for years, as their work goes above and beyond in the helping of all animals.

They're closed for now, as allegations of cruelty happening right there.

The President and some staff haven been arrested, investigators had seen the signs of cruelty while there.

sorry I have no link as I don't know how to do one.:(

I am shocked, really shocked and just so upset.:-1:-1

Is this the link you wanted?

I wonder how many people were fined and lost pets due to the same neglect as the humane society. Just sad.

This part of the story really made me mad  Avery said animals were starving to death and that during an investigation in June an officer lifted a cat and "the skin came off in his hands." That was in JUNE what took them so long to get these poor animals out of there? :-5 I hate these type of stories and hope the people that did this rot in jail!

oh thank you Peg!:-6:-6:-6

I keep trying and trying to do links, with copy/paste method and they don't work.:-5

who knows now who were fined?

This is mind boggling Peg, its widely known in Ontario for what they do and their adoptions have helped out so much.

Every month or so they have an 'adoptions free' weekend for 3 days when more animals are overcrowding........and, it works.

adoption fee's were only around 50.00...

....when someone walks into a huge pet store chain here, called P.J.'s, you pay 200.00 for a kitten and god knows where these animals come from. :sneaky:

It just overwhelms me, I just am in shock.:-5:-5

Prevention for Cruelty of Animals here will do something to them.:-5

and who will ever trust them when considering adopting a pet?

4 years ago, they had got a call that a dog was locked in a car in the heat.

An official from there raced out, broke the window and attended to the dog immediately, the owner of the car came back yelling at him, the official then punched him, as the official said, the dog was more important, which everyone agreed.

He was then charged by police.....thanks to all of us who wrote to the Toronto Police Department, the official got his job back.:-6

He is now considered a hero, there is his plaque at The Humane Society and at the police department.:guitarist

The dog was in critical condition, and it took them two years to get him back to his normal self.:-5:-5

now what will we do?

shelters here? -after 48 hours when someone takes in a lost pet or they find one?

they euthanize them!:-5:-5

Hello! I found your forum while looking up the THS story.

I understand your worry and frustration at the THS news - it's terribly upsetting, and such a betrayal of trust for all the members, volunteers and other supporters who have put their faith in the THS for so many years. We can only hope that when the smoke has cleared, the THS will have new leadership and openness, so they can resume doing the excellent work they have been known for in the past. The current board and executive have much to answer for.

But I do want to put in a word for Toronto Animal Services, which is the city of Toronto's shelter system. While it's true they don't have a strict no-kill policy, the TAS staff and volunteers are really committed to finding good, safe forever homes for as many animals as they can, even going so far as to bring in dogs and cats from other jurisdictions in hope of rehoming them here. They have excellent facilities, committed and kind-hearted workers, and their practice is not to euthanise unless an animal is truly unadoptable for some reason (as a rule, illness or injury aren't that reason - they have an excellent network of vets and hospitals they partner with).

I was at TAS just last week, to visit the cat rooms: some of the cats had been there for months, in clean and bright cages with food, water, toys, soft blankets, and clean litter. They get outside-the-cage exercise and playtime every day, too. The dogs also have safe, clean kennels - not luxurious, but roomy enough, and there are kind volunteers who take them outside every day for walks and socialisation.

Also, TAS works with PetSmart stores setting up adoption weekends - they bring in a couple of dozen cats/kittens over the weekend, and then screen potential adopting families. Usually by the end of a weekend all of the cats have found their new homes.

Odie, you're so right to be concerned with the THS news - I am, too! - but try not to worry about the animals who go to the city's shelters. There really are much worse options for them!

hi and welcome to fg!

I have had 2 friends who lost their cats..when they found them 3 days later at our city shelter.....they had been put down.:sneaky:

I know the city shelters have lots up for adoption as I to have been to a few, and everything appears to be kept very clean and the animals look really healthy.

Its going to take a long time for the THS to get this horrid thing cleared up, animals supposedly are being fed....but now the animals are stuck there with no adoptions.

and will people still want to adopt there now.:-3

The Toronto Humane Society has opened its doors once again to animal adoption. These are the first adoptions since top officials at the Society were charged with animal cruelty last fall.

whoopee!:guitarist:guitarist

1,000 animals are here, that tells you just how huge this place is.

________________________________________________________________

The cats and dogs at the centre of one of Canada's largest animal cruelty investigations are finally starting to find homes.

Animal lovers trickled through the Toronto Humane Society's doors yesterday, the first day that the shelter has opened the doors of its River Street facility to the public since Nov. 26, when five senior managers were arrested and charged with criminal animal cruelty.

THS spokesman Ian McConachie said that at least seven animals were adopted, including a young German shepherd-cross named Dixie.

“Dixie really seemed to warm up to her new owner, and he really seemed attached to her as well so we were very pleased to see Dixie leave for her new home,” he said.

Of more than 1,000 animals in the shelter's care, only 125 cats and about 25 dogs were available for adoption yesterday. Inspector Kevin Strooband of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said that the remaining 800-odd animals have health problems that mean they aren't quite ready for adoption yet.

“ are still being looked at by the veterinarians and the blood work is being done and others tests are being done,” he said. “As those results come back and as they get cleared by the veterinarians, they will be going out for adoption.”

The THS has come under fire for allegedly diverting funds away from animal care toward lawyers. The latest legal wrangling has heightened those concerns. Over the holidays, the THS launched a $15-million lawsuit against the OSPCA and Mr. Strooband, accusing them of conducting a negligent investigation and defamation, among other allegations.

Lawyers for both animal-welfare charities will be in court Wednesday to set dates for the THS's application to throw out the search warrant the OSPCA used to enter the shelter more than five weeks ago. The OSPCA has said its investigation has been consumed by the care and one-by-one inspection of the approximately 1,100 animals inside the crowded facility.
