I use Angel Cards now and again, rather than the Tarot deck. Does that mean I believe Angels really exist. Hmm I don't know. I'm quite spiritual, but I struggle when I don't have hard fast evidence in front of me.

Do you believe in Angels Pam?

I imagine angels to be amorphous, genderless, terrifying forces of supernatural light having absolutely no resemblance to the bumbling, romantic, all too human winged caricatures beloved of Hollywood film makers.

But I am under no illusion that my idea of angels is just that, my idea of angels - and has no more substance than anyone else's imaginings.

I believe in gaurdian angels.

I have no idea what one looks like, but I do have the faith that they exist. I believe they are spiritual beings who may appear visibly when necessary or at God's command, but they are always present in society as unseen beings.

I never did Pam. I'd heard that angels leave white feathers as a sign. This had never happened to me until one night I was sleeping at my brothers house in Sussex. He had not long had his first born and as we had lost both parents in a short time together, I said to him before we went to bed that I wished Mother and father could see us so close to gether with his new born son.. That night I didn't sleep well and got up at 4 am to have a cigg and a cup of tea. I never smoke in homes with young children and as I opened the back door to step onto the patio, there were two white feathers on the doorstep. It was still dark so no birds were up and it was windy so they should have blown away but they were there perfectly still on the step. Did my parents leave them to tell us they had seen us together after all?.... We'll never know.

Glad you started the thread. I find myself oft times being accused of deliberately being provocative just for the sake of it. But I'm going to ask anyway.

If people believe the bible is the literal word of god does that mean they also believe in angels? I've seen one or two tv series about angels but I've always thought of them in the same way as I do stories about vampires and fairies-entertaining but no one actually believes they are real. I'm just curious that's all.

If you believe in angels do you also believe in second sight? Why is the latter seen as witchcraft but believing in invisible beings is perfectly OK?

That's a lovely story, Oscar!! And something you can hold on to.

GMC - I don't believe the Bible is the literal word of God, so can't answer that part of your post.

As for your general question, I'm with Mr Shakespeare's Hamlet when he says to his friend Horatio:

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio

Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

I'm by nature both sceptical and cynical and yet I've experienced a few surprises that are beyond my logical comprehension. I try to keep an open mind.

I think I saw my personal guardian angel. I was in big trouble. He appeared out of nowhere.

In Indiana, the winters are exceptionally cruel. My car broke down on a long stretch of interstate where the next gas station is like 20 miles away. In January, the temp was close to -20f. This was close to evening. There was absolutely noone around. I was wearing thin scrubs and only had a light jacket. I get out of the car and start walking. I keep looking behind me. Nobody. All of a sudden this black car pulls up in front of me, comes out of nowhere! A guy with blonde curly hair, and a black leather jacket walks toward me. I'm so cold by now i cant stop shaking, but I ask him if he is a good guy or a bad guy...I know it's stupid. He smiles and says he is a good guy. Takes me all the way home and doesnt accept the gas money I offered.

Now I know what you must be thinking. But I was absolutely alone. And I just had this FEELING! Cant explain it, you will just have to trust me.

As for the angel of death, I can feel it whenever it comes to collect a soul. Usually while I am manning the AMBU bag in trying to resuscitate someone who is dying.

For those that believe in Angels, they must also believe in Demons (fallen angels?) Have you been influenced by Demons or seen one? Are Demons real?

I believe in those as well. I would like to think I have not been influenced by them. But who can say that those self-rightous and selfish moments were not the result of that kind of thing. I can only imagine that they would appear to be very attractive. But with a repulsive kind of feel to them. Who knows?

Reminds me of the Duino Elegies by Rainer Maria Rilke... "Every angel is terrifying...".

From a very early age, I've often had very vivid dreams of angels, but the angels in my dreams are quite the opposite of most people's idea of angels... these are very dark dreams where angels are at war, fighting and killing.

Anytime! It's good that you cut and pasted the German version. Rilke isn't known for his use of simple sentences, curt noun phrases or concrete imagery, so... the German doesn't translate well to English, unfortunately, so I highly recommend learning at least enough German to experience his lyrical, dense poetry the way he intended it.

Hi Pam:D

I really wish that I believed in angels, and Heaven and Hell because it would make my life easier, I think.

I'm an agnostic.....on the fence...not sure about any of this stuff but certainly don't worry about it. I do try to keep an open mind, but it's hard at times. I was raised in the Roman Catholic faith but left the Church emotionally at age 16 and physically during college.

I cry and grieve so bitterly when a loved one dies because I just know in my heart that I won't see them again....ever. It would be so nice to believe that I'd see my loved ones again after death.

I love the thoughts of having an angel looking over my shoulder:-6...would also love if that angel was John Travolta's angel in the movie "Michael.":p

I lost a son 24 years ago. She sat by my bed a while when no one else was there. Just sat didnt speak,, at the time i thought she was real and was annoyed about her being there,, i gave her an angry look shut my eyes and turned away. Later the nurses assured me they would not let a stranger in to my room without my permission let a lone a nun, and they definatley didnt have nuns going round visiting people. Alos it was only a matter of hours since my son had died. Still it took me a lot of years to realise who she was,, ( with the help of some strange dreams, along the way). Then a few months ago,, she woke me up by poking me in the neck,, i still dont know why i needed to be woken yet, but it felt important that i was.

Excellent topic.

My answer is yes based on subjective experience but then all experience is ultimately subjective.

So sorry Kaz... I lost a baby daughter also.

I have given this thread much thought and I recall another spooky moment.

Around 6 months after my father died, my brother dreamt that he came to him dressed as a monk. A few months after that, I went to a clairvoyant and she told me my father had gone on in the spirit world to become a great teacher. I'm sitting there thinking 'What a load of bollocks' as she was talking and then she said he was a monk.

Thanks Nomad for bumping up this thread! I meant to look for it yesterday and forgot. yestermorning, i awoke after having a weird dream,, i kept on thinking about it so i decided to go root out a book about dreams my daughter had bought me a while back. Anyway while looking in the book i saw an explanation of dreams about eyes,,, now i never mentioned when i was woken in the quote above, i had been dreaming about eyes,,, so the last thng it said in the book abut eye dreams was ,, Also eye dreams can be an indication that you have guardian angels watching over you:eek: spooky eh:-3

Kaz, that is so strange. I began cleaning off my shelves filled with books just a few minutes ago and came across this book, "Angels Everywhere" by Lynn Valentine. I thought it sounded familiar and I looked on the inside page and it was a gift I had inscribed to my mother, who believed very strongly in angels. In her lifetime she'd had a couple of experiences that were difficult to explain, as have I. This is a small book and I'll read it tonight.

Some people believe that at this time of the year the passageways between different levels of existence are opened.

Maybe the doors are never quite closed, but at the time of the Hallows, some of us seem more sensitive to other possibilities. We play with the notion of ghosts and ghouls and gobelins and things that go bang in the night. We talk about angels. Some of us dream of loved ones no longer with us who reach out to us lovingly, reassuringly.

So many things we just don't know.

Halloween, the eve of All Saints Day is almost upon us.
