The marshmallow experiment is a famous test conducted by Walter Mischel at Stanford University. Kids are given a marshmallow and told they can have one now, or if they wait, they will get a second one in a few minutes.

I think adults learn that it is possible to increase pleasure by postponing it. We put money we could spend now into a savings or investment account. We make ourselves wait for dinner, until we've built up an appetite, we can flirt a little or even a lot before leaping on the beloved. A part of pleasure is in the anticipation of the pleasure. To postpone eating one marshmallow, so that we can have two later - why not? In my case, I could postpone that indefinitely, as I find marshmallows too sweet - but if it was a piece of good cheese... yep. Keep it for now! In let it increase until after dinner on Saturday. I'll have three pieces then, thankyou.. and am smiling in happy anticipation.
