Played in the sand though isn't it. How about French Boules or whatever they call it, that's similar.

Yes---It is very similar to Petanque, which I play when in New Zealand.

The game is played in the sand, crushed sea shells, pea gravel etc. & is similar to French Boules or Petanque.

I played Petanque BEFORE I retired - rather than SINCE.

There are similarities and dissimilarities. Bocce is played making a short run with the ball in your hand before pitching it, whereas in Petanque you must stand still and make the pitch from a ring, a drawn line on the ground, feet planted upon terra firma. Petanque uses heavy, steel balls ... Bocce is played with light, rather large wooden balls covered with a thin (I presume) metal convering. Tin, perhaps?
