Bill signed on embryonic stem research

President Obama just signed a bill to allow embryonic stem research. This opens the door for many new possibilites in the treatment of diseases and disabilities.

Are you for or against this type of research?

I think I'm in favour, as long as it's properly regulated. It's not an issue I know much about, I'm afraid.

I'm also in favor and I will agree with clodhopper, don't know much about it either except to listen to the far right wing, they make it sound like scientists are going after women who are preggars and begging them to abort thier kids. dimwits.

I am delighted by this, I am a scientst, and I think that the benefits of stem cell research by far outweight the extreme religious objections. It shows that President Obama is serious about putting US science's status within government back to where it should be. Its one of the most refreshing things, after having to endure 10 years of politically sanctioned, religiously inspired assaults on science and scientists in the US.

Yes and I agree with you there. Bush did nothing but cave into the extreme right wing objections. The right wing nuts are making this look like scientists will be coming after all women in my country as targets. Nothing could be further from the truth. When a woman decides to have an abortion and goes through with it, that is her decision, nobody elses. And what they do here at the mo is they get rid of the cells. They bury it.

I am trying to find the article on line but cannot...

The controversy of embryonic stem research may be over anyway, there are new finding where the same results can now be found by taking cells directly from the person suffering and the process will no longer require taking cells from fetuses.

I saw the report about a week ago, but I am sorry I cannot find it, did anyone else hear about this?

The thing is, this research has been going on and would've continued whether Obama signed it into law or not. Really, the only thing Obama did was make it legal for us taxpayers to fund the project instead of it being privately funded by the companies doing the research.

My question is, why hasn't the media paid any attention to the research on adult stem cells?

There never was a ban. One pundit today said that federal funding is only a small percentage of the overall amount spent on stem cell research anyway. Anybody have those numbers handy, perchance?

I'm happy to see that the majority here are for stem cell research. This new technology is going to help a lot of people who are suffering from fatal, incurable diseases who can now have hope. Also, think of the money that can be saved from expensive surgeries where some of the same procedures can simply be done with an injection.

But there's no need to kill humans to do embryonic research. Medical technology is already making body parts regenerated from the patient's own cells. No embryo needed.

EXACTLY! And from what I have read about it, the stem cells from adults have responded better than the embryonic ones.
