What We Need is a Little FDR

Post by QUINNSCOMMENTARY »

Oh, no it’s not what you think.

What we need is some real Fix Da Recession.

On the other hand, the real FDR did have one thing right; he tried to build people’s confidence to get through the depression. What we have today are politicians including the president doing little but harp on the doom and gloom, which is hardly a way to get people up and spending. :(

It is hard to accept that a $800 billion package of spending and tax cuts is going to get us moving again when hundreds of billions of that amount is going to be spent by the government on the government.

Then we have things like this one. $15 billion to the Department of Education to “encourage states to raise academic standards, bolster teacher training and undertake more sophisticated testing and data gathering.” Say what? This money is to be spent at the discretion of the Secretary of Education.

Encourage, bolster, more sophisticated, how stimulating does all that sound? :-2

Nevertheless, who can argue with making sure our kids have a better education and who can argue that it is not a good investment for the years ahead, it is. However, the problem is that is has nothing to do with the economy in 2009, 2010 or 2011 or… The problem is that it is $15 billion we do not have to spend, but if we are going spend it anyway, it should be spent on something that gets into the economy before the end of 2009.

I have a few suggestions:

Give every child in the US $1.00 to spend on candy. That will help the local candy store, the supermarket and the local dentist and since mom or dad has to take child to the store that means they spend money doing so. See, it’s simple.

Here’s another, the government should subsidize the cost of popcorn at the movies, I mean talk about a rip off. Do you enjoy paying $5.95 for $.15 worth of corn (without extra butter)? So, if the government paid $5 of the $5.95, you would go to the movies more frequently and Tom Cruise, or Jennifer Aniston would have less of a chance of facing foreclosure, spread the wealth!

See, we have it backwards. Although it is now out of the stimulus package, there was a few million in there to help people stop smoking. Now I ask you how is that a good idea, it is counterproductive. If people stop smoking the recession moves on to the cigarette makers, the person smoking no longer goes to the store where they may purchase something else while buying cigarettes and, here is the big one, the person who stops smoking will likely be healthier and then we have gone and taken money from the economy. See, you have to be careful what you ask for (yes, I am kidding).

We don’t need politicians to come up with this stuff, we Americans know how to spend money, just give it to us without filtering it through a half dozen federal and state agencies. Oh wait, that would mean tax cuts, I hope Grandma and Harry aren’t reading this. :-3

So Mr. President, lighten up, you are going to spend lots of money that we don’t have, you are going to get to stimulate us all, but in the mean time, how about a little more of “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself” and less of social policy spending that only stimulates democrats from west of the Texas border. :-5

Brilliant. I liked Jon Stewart's suggestion - instead of giving the money to the banks, it would have been nice if they gave the money to us, the consumers, so that we could pay off our debts and/or stimulate the economy - either way it goes back to the banks. I also like the suggestions in the book Thinking Big in the essay by Dean Baker - the progressive economist. Like how about we start taking asset bubbles seriously so we don't have another dotcom/housing crisis on our hands in another ten years? It is, indeed, time for a little FDR.

I am all for tax cuts which put more money in my pocket.

"They", meaning government, say they can't do that cause we'll just save it.

Trust me, if they split this $827 billion between all of us (they say that will give us each a little over $9,000) I might save some, but the temptation to get a few things I need and want would be spent and, hopefully, help stimulate the economy.

I could take an oath like the politicians do....... I promise to_____________ :yh_rotfl

Bring back the simple things in life again. Makes one wonder where we lost our way huh.

Wait a minute! I'm the teacher that gets that child in class after the sugar rush! :wah:

You raise a good point, what bothers me most about the current economic environment is that there are millions of people out there who followed the simple life buying what they could afford, avoiding credit cards, saving for the future and yet they do cannot escape the problems of today and in fact may be among those losing their job.

We started to lose our way in the 1960s and then it accelerated in the 1970s, we thought we could have it all and that convention was a bad thing, that stay at home moms were demeaning to themselves and that we all needed our own bedroom with bath, family room, 400 SF kitchen and perhaps even a wine cellar.

The so called simple life is not looking too bad at the moment.

It appears the candy idea is a bit of a problem, first there is the sugar rush and now price is a problem, so taking a page from our Congress I am offering an amendment.

Make it ten dollars and let them lose in Toys R Us, I know there are a few Thomas the Train engines and hot wheels and perhaps even a Cars toy that you can get for ten bucks and if not, we can add an additional $5.00 for mom or dad and they can kick in.

We have money to burn (affer we print it) remember. ;)

Don't know about the states but here those on lower and middle income pay a disproportionate amount on tax-so do small and medium businesses while large corporations and those rich enough to have good tax accountants take steps to reduce their share of the tax bill and get away with it as, after all, they generate the wealth and provide the jobs-just take all the profit and dodge their tax bills.most We could do with a bit more socialism from out prime minister who seems to have forgotten his roots and the type of party he is supposed to lead.

I was talking with an acquaintance once and he was ranting and raving about high paid executives, how unfair it was and he concluded that everyone would make the same.

I found this intere4sting since he was a small business man and operated two flower shops.

So I said to him, "You would be happy making $49,000 a year?" "Of course not," he replied. "Well, if you want everyone to make the same that is the average4 family income in the US so nobody would be making more than that."

Ends of conversation.

Is that the kind of socialism you see as beneficial?
