One-Trillion Dollars
That's with a T folks.
Obama says he will need One-Trillion Dollars to kick-start the US economy.
The economic crisis we are currently in gives him a rare chance to enact big portions of his agenda that otherwise might have languished for months or years in various committes of the House and Senate.
The Stimulus Package, as they are calling it, is going to be a very fast moving bill. Obama has already been speaking to the people of the US as well as the House and Senate as to the need for action, and action quickly.
The down side of this speedy move can result in many ambitious, highly contentious projects being steamrolled through on the tails of items needing immediate attention.
Obama has a number of priorities, including billions of dollars for renewable energy, education and health care innovations. I'm not saying these are not needed and are not good, but haste could be very costly and not handing it correctly from inception could create a nightmare to operate.
More important, in reality, just how much can we fix all at the same time? Even God Himself took creation one day at a time.

not to service the interest payments but to reduce the additional outstanding balance built up just over the last eight years, and excluding inter-departmental loans and borrowings, just to pay back the net amount actually borrowed by the Bush Administration and on which interest payments are currently also made from taxation
That would take forty years to pay off the loans the Bush Administration took out. Using 5 dollars of every 100 that come into the Federal and State budgets, doing nothing but to pay back the debt added by the Bush Administration over the last eight years, it takes forty years to make the capital repayments AND the interest on the debt needs continually servicing on top of that. That's what this criminal administration has done to the USA since January 2001.
And you're worried about adding another 16% to the net National Debt? Another one trillion dollars?
Why? How can the loan be any worse than it is already?
Noticing and responding to this thread is entirely coincidental, we're not having a fight.
The numbers you need to check my ballpark estimate are:

The numbers you need to check my ballpark estimate are:
- 13,780,000 GDP(PPP)10,600,000 current net National Debt (excluding inter-departmental loans and borrowings)
27.5% tax from all sources as a proportion of GDPtherefore 9 months GDP to pay down the National Debttherefore 33.56 months tax from all sources to pay down the National DebtSome proportion of the net National Debt is owed to funds held in trust for, for example, pension commitments already made, built up by past social security payments. It's still a debt that has to be paid back.Proportion of the current net National Debt built up during the Bush Administration: 72%

If you are refering to just the National Debt, you answered it yourself. It would be 16% greater.
What I am concerned about is the overspending of money on things that could very well wait a bit. Obama, like any other politition, has great ideas of what he'd like to see done, but should it be done today on tomorrow's dollars?
Obama is only elected for four years. He may or may not do another four years. We don't know what the future holds yet. If we did, none of us would be in the mess we all are in today.

Spend nothing, by all means. It might be the cheapest way out. It might, on the other hand, so cripple the US economy that you'll no longer be able to fuel your fighters much less afford to send your armed forces abroad. That's what I'm rather hoping for, personally. Refusing to allow a recovery program would be a neat way of achieving it.

A recovery program is one thing. Tacking on special projects to it is another.

The US debt to China alone is relatively far larger than what Obama is prepared to use to kick start the economy. If he doesn't kick start the economy, how exactly does America crawl out of their national debt?

Or, indeed, how does the Western world as a whole? I'm praying it never happens. Far too many people die when the West is affluent.

I don't know. I sure hope it isn't by going to war as it happened after the Great Depression..................... That certainly created alot of jobs, but that is not the type of job growth the US wants.

Then reduce the spending! If you want to watch for Special Projects, keep an eye out for foreign aid. The US has no business at all handing out foreign aid either from taxation or from charitable giving, both are entirely Special Project money which reduce the cash available to the nation. Both should be made illegal as soon as Obama takes office. Write to your representatives demanding it.

The Republican party wanted to reduce spending with small government. McCain was not elected.
Obama with his big government plans to legislate everything for everyone is who received the most votes. I'm afraid Big Brother is really, really here now.

All it takes it you pressuring your representatives. That's why they're there, to take your point of view into account.
Scrutinise any attempt by Federal Government to make any Federal taxation money, including Federal loans, available for school building. That's not the job of Washington. Neither is road construction for anything but the Interstates, and the Interstates are in perfectly good order already. If you see money being proffered for improving waterways or irrigation, get it stopped dead in its tracks. Write to your representatives demanding economies.

Bush, like his father before him, is a Republican' which should mean small government. However, in October of 2001, during his first term of office, the Patriot Act was passed. That took alot of freedom away from all of us.

Today's a good day for passing an opinion on the eight years then.
Was it a Republican administration?
Was it small government? George Bush certainly promised it was going to be in his 2000 election debates. But then, he promised not to beat up on the world too and honesty is an alien concept to the man.
So why would you believe that mass murderer of non-combatants John McCain when he claimed he'd have led a small government administration?
