I saw the ad for the UCofC. As an opponent of evangelical Christianity and it's inherent built in hate I was surprised at the ad. I consider Christian fundamentalists as brethren of Islamic extremists, Hindu militants and Jewish settlers. Why wouldn't the centrist media air the ad? I may be incorrect but aren't you a conservative? Bush supporters would be more likely to want to see the ad nixed. Confused in KC.
"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group that believes you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas millionaires, or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid." you are confused, because you seem to base your arguments on the stereotypes, bias, preconceptions, and prejudice you seem to have. which is unsurprising.
"conservatives hate homosexuals"
"christians hate homosexuals"

i'm particularly amused by your mention of 'the centrist media'. ROFL!

Hey! That's my old Church! I used to love that church in the 60's. Sometimes we would go out to clean up the little creek behind our church while the minister gave the sermon standing ankle deep in the running water.
But.......I can see why the networks aren't running this commercial. The commercial is trying to send the message, "We except everybody." But less intelligent people will only see blacks being discriminated against. Yes, I know that's just the superficial part, but believe me, lots of people will get pissed off about this commercial.
Once a teacher I knew tried to show the movie, "American History X" in class. The movie is actually very anti-racism, with an American nazi going to prison and learning to understand and accept a black man.
But that sure wasn't the message some of the parents saw. They believed she was trying to convert children to Nazism. They just about crucified her. I guess you just can't get too deep when trying to communicate with the masses.
Some of them are ignorant,
(I should know, I crusade against them every day.)

I do stereotype rightist religious fundamentalists. They are my enemy. Calling them out is crucial to abort their attempts at making my country into a one party theocracy. Anotherwords stepping back in time 400 years. The media isn't centrist? There is nothing liberal, progressive or especially socialist in any of our media. Capitalists own and control it. Perhaps I should restate myself and say I support a NON-capitalist media. It is encouraging knowing there are conservatives out there whose opinions differ from Fred Phelps.

I think the add is very, very interesting, does this only mean that all races are welcome, or are gays also welcome? I don't see why it was not aired; the stations air freaking Billy Graham adds and some of the other adds for more non-inclusive denominations.

I made an objection, but I was very leary typing in my addy and whatnot. I will be pissed if I start getting mail from that denomination.

that is certainly your choice.

i consider that nonsense. there is no such attempt at work. did you bother listening to the tapes of the conversations bush had with a friend before the 2000 election? he made it very clear that he was not going to be a lackey for the christian right. liberals apparently don't want to acknowledge that - frankly, it was a bombshell, but of course the (yes, liberal) media gave it precious little play, because, of course, it doesn't fit the stereotype, or the agenda to portray bush as an evil little christian fundie out to turn this into a theocracy. oh well.
The media isn't centrist? There is nothing liberal, progressive or especially socialist in any of our media.
well, of course, if you're on the far left, then the plain-left media woudl appear centrist.
Capitalists own and control it. Perhaps I should restate myself and say I support a NON-capitalist media.
wow. so you want government controlled media? that's an interesting concept. you're familiar with other great works of government controlled media? "Pravda", the russian daily? You know, "Pravda" means Truth. it was very clever.
It is encouraging knowing there are conservatives out there whose opinions differ from Fred Phelps.
it's discouraging to be confronted with blatant, unapologetic bigotry. the sentence above is no different than the following:
"It is encouraging to know there are black people out there whose opinions differ from Eldridge Cleaver".

did you uncheck the "Check this box if you would like to receive periodic updates or action alerts"?
if not, you'll likely receive further communication from them, but i doubt they're in the business of selling email addresses.

The add suprised me, I went to a Church of Christ off and on for many years. Are they the same as the UCoC? The CoC that I went to was not all inclusive.

It's genuinely impossible to bridge the yawning gap between conservatism and my Marxist anti-religious beliefs. I have made attempts on other boards and if it didn't get anywhere it got me banned as the religious right is so intolerant. I'm glad you aren't one of the haters. They must be crushed.

you certainly won't be banned here. we don't ban people for ideas. in fact, we don't ban people at all. the only things we ban are spammers.
marxism is SO last century.

i've no idea about the church. i'm not a practicing christian, myself, besides being a member of western culture ( "you're soaking in it!" )

The Russian CP is the 2nd largest political party in the country. Rupert Murdoch stated in a speech I saw on CSPAN that socialism and revolutionary Marxism have taken power in or have widespread support in Slovakia, Spain, Hungary, eastern Germany, the Baltic states, all of South America except Colombia, Ukraine, Belarus, Italy, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, booming China, Kyrgystan, Kazakhstan, India, Myanmar and many sub-Saharan countries plus Libya and Syria. Murdoch is a whacko to me but looking into the claims was enjoyable; He's right!! The Red Flag is alive and well as long as capitalism continues to provide poverty, religious strife and economic war that benefits a few in the U.S. and it's client states.

communism does no better. history provides palpable evidence of this.
how about those 35-60 million slaughtered in stalin's gulags? mao's extermination of 60 million 'bandits' in the cultural revolution. if you prefer genocide to poverty, then yeah - rah rah marxism!

On the basis of free speech I see no reason the ad shouldn’t be shown. I’m a little surprised at the Church of Christ though. The ad implies that other denominations are at the very least, racist. I was a little offended when I watched it..

See? That's the same reaction I had. they're trying to be positive, but they are doing it by being negative about others in an indirect way. (shiver)
Something dark and insidious lurked in that ad. :yh_ghost

I didn't think so, I think that it showed that all who had been excluded from other churches were accepted into the UCC. I only thought of racism after seeing it again after reading your mention of it. I did not really think it was all that insidious. I know many Christians who left a church because their church condemned or judged them for various reasons, including divorce and remarriage and abortion.

Whether the ad is surprising or in bad taste there is absolutely no justification in disallowing it to be aired. I can't believe that was considered "unairable"! If there had been nudity or something.... I don't know what I expected in a banned religious ad but this was not it.
