Protect the right to vote!!!

Post by anastrophe »

Godiva Girl wrote: Ask President Bush and Washington Republicans to publicly support the reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act

In 2004, hundreds of thousands of people had problems voting or couldn’t vote at all. In some neighborhoods, there weren’t enough voting machines; in other areas the machines malfunctioned. Forty years after Congress reaffirmed the right of every eligible citizen to vote, this is unacceptable. Forty years later, some barriers remain.

March 7th marks the 40th anniversary of the march on Selma, Ala., a historic moment that paved the way for the final passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson, the Voting Rights Act removed barriers that systematically kept African Americans and other minorities away from the polls.

The Voting Rights Act is coming up for reauthorization in Congress. Sign our petition today and tell President Bush and Washington Republicans to demand real election reform so that the election problems of 2000 and 2004 are never repeated. Ask them to publicly support the reauthorization of the Voting Rights Act.

Please sign the petition at: www.democrats.org/action/index.html
this is pure fiction, and hysteria. 'hundreds fo thousands had problems voting or couldn't vote'? a very clever turn of phrase. change it to "hundreds of thousands had problems voting but were still able to cast their votes, and a small number were unable to cast their votes for whatever reason" and you'd be closer to an accurate statement. there is *no credible evidence* that thousands of people were unable to vote, nor is there credible evidence that it was due to malfeasance. the problems, in fact, were due to unprecedented voter turnout, which is a truly great thing, and which apparently caught many voting districts unprepared for the sheer volume of voters. that's not fraud or conspiracy, that's simple incompetence - a classic formula. is it bad that some people had difficulty voting? of course. is it worse that some people were unable to vote? of course. but this is casting the issue into the tone of dark conspiracy, not simple unpreparedness.

hey, how about that group of kerry workers who slashed the tires on fifty cars that were going to be used by bush workers to help get people to the polls? as i recall, they've never been prosecuted for what was a very clear effort to prevent people from voting.

People were turned away from the polls, the night of the 2004 election people were interviewed who were turned away, that's proof enough for me. President Bush is an ignorant fool who has no place in office and is only there because of his father. The entire republican party is a dark conspiracy and anyone who cannot see that needs their head examined.
i see. so you were okay with the kerry thugs who violated federal law by interfering with voting? glad to know where you stand.

this is the classic, liberal stance: reality doesn't exist. bush wasn't voted into office by the largest number of votes in history, he's president 'only because of his father'. right. republicans are evil, democrats are saints.

it all makes sense. :yh_silly

I guess we could add that all democrats are paranoid?

I called my shrink upon hearing the news that being a Republican, I need my head examined. When I told him why I was calling, he asked for GG's number.

She's unlisted. :yh_ooooo

Not usually, but I have been known to make exceptions.

GG, your passion for your beliefs is admirable.

Your tenacity is impressive.

Your sense of humor, however, leaves a bit to be desired.

i have to say, the fact that Godiva Girl has not come near touching my comments on the kerry thugs, speaks volumes.

vote tampering by republicans is evil, deplorable, and cause for much outrage.

vote tampering by democrats is implicitly okay, and not worth even discussing.

here's a link to an article about the tire slashing, which was perpetrated by the son of a democratic congresswoman, democratic mayor, and others. 20 cars had their tires slashed, rather than the 50 i stated.

It's going to be interesting to see what GG has to say about this, although since it refutes her argument, perhaps she will just ignore it. :yh_wait

This is entertaining. GG, where are you?? I heard democrats eat their young, so it must be true. It's also stated that 42% of all statistics are made up.
Death is more universal than life. For although everyone dies, not everyone truly lives.

a nice try at deflection, except that you posted in this topic and others well after i 'laid down the gauntlet' regarding the malfeasance of the kerry workers who vandalized cars with the specific intent of preventing people from voting.

Kerrys people did something bad, I never said that the democratic party was perfect or that all members follow the rules and the same goes for the republicans. I can't speak for every democrat or account for their behavior. What I dont understand is why BR and Anastrophe find that they have to attack my posts just because my opinion differs from them. There is no reason why a debate cannot be done in a civilized manner.
since when is being blunt uncivilized? There's an old adage good old Harry S. Truman said: If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

We're not debating the color of the dinner napkins. we're debating very important issues pertaining to the functioning of this federal republic (nota bene: NOT a democracy). attacking you would be uncivilized. I'm not attacking you. i'm attacking the ideas you've put forth - things like 'rich republican pigs' - hardly a civilized turn of phrase. suggesting that the republicans stole both the 2000 and 2004 elections. serious charges. i will fully "attack" such charges, since i think they're hysterical, and false.

i didn't vote *for* bush - i voted against kerry. i don't like evasive eels. i prefer eels that have been lightly grilled, dipped in teriyaki sauce, and served as Unagi sushi. i disagree with a lot of Bush's public proclamations - but at least - for crying out loud - you know where the man stands, agree with him or not. i still have no idea what john kerry stands for, besides the value of marrying fantastically wealthy women.

of course, wealthy democrats are wholey benign. their accumulation of 'obscene' wealth is free of the sin it would acquire if they were republican. republicans hate people, and love only money. there are no republicans who are committed to public service. they are all out to make a buck, and to fluck the little guy.

hey, i'm ranting. fancy that.

If you have a problem with that, that's just too bad for you now isn't it? I have never said anything to suggest that all democrats were perfect or that all republicans are bad. My problem is with Bush and his cronies, I don't care who the democratic nominee was I was going to vote for them, anything to get Bush out of office. Bush stole the 2000 and 2004 election, end of story and I not debating with you over it anymore.
that's fine. you choose to believe a fantasy. that's your prerogative. the 2004 election was legitimate, bush won the popular vote by several million votes, and also won the electoral college. you can go with the 'ohio was tampered with' argument. fine. the democrats were calling for getting rid of the electoral college back in 2000, because gore won the popular vote. now, of course, the democrats hinge their argument strictly on the electoral college vote, and don't want to touch the popular vote, which he won, 'fair and square'.

when you're ready to deal with reality, lemme know. but i'm not holding my breath. those who believe republicans are inherently evil, the elections were stolen, etc, simply can't provide a rational debate, so it becomes a great big yawner after a while.

and yes, i've slipped into ad hominem. a cherished tradition, it tends to come with the territory when one's interlocutor starts turns to the 'all X are evil' mode of 'debate'.
