Yes, he was, I have "Cancer Ward", a very good writer, and his story is a warning from history.

The world rarely has giants like him. Integrity, a refusal to please for the sake of pleasing, astonishing hard work and ability and the hardest life imaginable. The inability of a totalitarian state to silence him says something for his stature and something for the refusal of the rulers of the Soviet Union to abandon all restraint to get what they wanted. Both should be remembered. Culture always had a value even at the worst moments.
