Scary day!
Thanks for the PM's asking after my mum.
After having a scan today to investigate an irregular heartbeat a tumour has been found on her heart. She's currently in a local hospital awaiting transfer to Plymouth or London for open heart surgery.
They are saying that its benign, not sure how they can know that at this stage but they have told her she should still be able to go on holiday in October.
I'm still a bit dazed and shocked at the moment, looks like it was discovered just in time.

Oh gosh, I'm sorry to hear this Betty. I can only imagine how you guys must feel now. I don't know how they would know it's benign either but through bloodwork and stuff they are somehow able to tell those things. It sounds like they feel positive about it and that is definitely a good sign. Thank you for updating us.

Hugs to you Boopster. :-4

Mum underwent further tests yesterday, her arteries are fine and all is looking good for the operation. She has a rare form of tumor but apparently if you're going to have one on your heart this is a good one to have. She's currently still in the hospital thats 50 minutes away but waiting for transfer to either Plymouth or London, fingers crossed its Plymouth.
Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes :-4

Still no change, Mum is fit and well and feels like a fraud being sat in hospital waiting for the op, but no way will they let her come home. Hopefully the consultants will start chasing things up tomorrow and get things moving. Fingers crossed...

Thanks Abbey, feeling a bit tense, its the waiting I think, and the fact she is insisting that she will go alone to the next hospital for the op. We can't let her do that!

If they won't then she might as well get home and start recovering. Have they reached the service level in Plymouth of "tick here if you want a video of your operation"?
Having a parent in hospital is a curious combination of anxiety, inconvenience and disruption, it's one of those things where you have no control at all over the timing, the duration or the outcome. I'm thinking of you, I hope it goes well.
(the local anaesthetic thing came from some sleeve notes I was reading last week (from the CD, not the web) - in particular "the first song on the album, "Heartfeeder" was inspired by Adams' recall of the surgeon sitting astride his chest and boring into his breast bone with a joiner's brace and bit while he was fully conscious in a dangerous emergency procedure designed to circumvent the six week recovery period". The NHS has advanced since those days).

Just had a call from Betty. Her Mum had a four hour operation this morning to remove the tumour and she is recovering in Derriford Hospital in Plymouth. Betty will probably be in Plymouth until Sunday.
The shock of the events of the last few days is just beginning to hit Betty, I could hear it in her voice. So I'm going to start a hugs, beams and love thread for her.

I will go up again to visit tomorrow. The hospital were saying they'd be looking to discharge her on day 5 which is today! :-2
They discovered yesterday that her blood was too thin so they are now sorting out her dosage levels of warfarin.
She's not allowed to be left alone at all for two weeks at least so we are trying to sort somewhere out for her to go as she won't come and stay with any of us. Shes very weak, tires easily and is unable to do anything for herself, its amazing that they kick them out so quick!

hi betty,
i had the same trouble with my mum  when she was ill !! trying to persuede her to come and stay with us was like banging yer head on a brick wall.
we did get her down here for a while , (about ten days !!)with us but she had to have an operation.
she was in RCH for several months then penrice in st austell and finally got her own ruddy way and went back to bournemouth to her own flat.
i have to admit she was a lot happier with her friends around her and a home help.
they can be worse than kids cant they ??

My grandma is the same way, she won't stay with anyone but occasionally she'll stay with my mom. She'd rather be in her own house and she's 90. I hope you can find a good place for the 2 weeks if you can't talk her into staying with you. :yh_hugs:yh_hugs:-4 for both of you.

She's off the acute ward now and has a room of her own. She may well be moved to another hospital closer to home tomorrow. We have to wait until 1pm tomorrow, then ring to find out. Thats a pain in itself as we would look to leave home at 12pm to make the two hour drive up to Plymouth. So, if she doesn't get moved we will be a bit late for the visiting start time. Oh well... fingers crossed she heads this way :driving:

Two steps forward, one step back...
Waited until 1pm before my sis rang the hospital as per instructions from the doctor. No blood results back. But news that Mum wasn't feeling too good, wouldn't give a lot of information which is annoying seeing as she is two hours drive away
. So.... I drove up there, was going to take the children up with me anyway today but seeing as they said she wasn't too good my sister said she'd have them. Took me three hours to do what could take 1 1/2 hours on a really good day. It appears the medication needs a little fine tuning and some pain that mum had felt in her shoulder is muscular, possibly from her trying to do too much... Glad I drove up and saw her, she's looking tired but she's ok - phew. Looks like it will be a little longer before they discharge her.

Recovery takes longer as people get older, I've found that myself. Is your mum over fifty yet?

Sorry mum took a backwards step Boops but thankfully it's given her more time in hospital where she can get the care first hand.

Yes, there is that, and of course it just backs up our thoughts that they are too quick to discharge them!!
Spot, Mum is 75, so yes, well over 50. The surgeon made a comment that she is a very fit old lady, he got glared at and asked 'Who are you calling old?' :wah:
